Avondale CC march on to semi-finals

- POST PRIMARY

Avondale CC 2-15 Col Chill Mhantain 2-11

The last of the quarter-finals in the Boys Senior football ‘A’ championship took place in Rathnew on Tuesday. The pitch was in great condition and this led to a fast flowing open game.

Avondale were playing against the wind in the first half but opened the scoring with a Matthew Traynor point.

Soon after that, Charlie O’Brien found the net at the other end for CCM.

The Wicklow school added two points but in the 15th minute Dermot Whelan had a goal for Avondale.

Chill Mhantain added three points, the best of which was a long range effort by John Moorehouse.

Avondale points by Mark Cullen and Dermot Whelan narrowed the gap but Jack Dunne completed the first half scoring with a CCM point to leave his team ahead by 1-7 to 1-4 at half-time.

Indeed, Chill Mhantain might have been further ahead as Dylan Smith had a good shot for goal that hit the post.

The three-point lead was increased to seven against the wind within four minutes of the restart thanks to a John Moorehouse goal and a Jensen O’Connor Cox point and CCM looked the more likely team to qualify for the semi final.

However, a defensive mix up at the other end in the fifth minute let Richard Sheehan in for a goal.

This seemed to inspire Avon- dale and they gradually took control. Chill Mhantain did have a good goal chance soon afterwards but a good Dylan Smith shot was well saved by Avondale goalkeeper Aidan Murray.

Avondale’s Matthew Traynor and Oisin McGraynor took control of midfield and set up some good chances for their forward line.

A succession of points followed with David Miley, Ross Ward and substitute Conor Kearney to the fore. Colaiste Chill Mhantain did look dangerous in breakaways but were unable to score the goal they needed against a strong defence and when referee Eddie Leonard blew the final whistle it was Avondale who had qualified to meet Coláiste Bhride Carnew in the semi final.
