Miley qualifies for international spot
WICKLOW’S Community Games games may be on a short break but the school competitions are in play with the Leinster finals of the College Junior Combined Events - five events: 60mt hurdles, shot putt, long jump, 200m and 800m - taking place last week.
St Kevin’s Community College was represented by Alan Miley of Dunlavin at Abbotstown on Tuesday last. Alan competes in Community Games and won All Ireland gold at U8 60m and silver at U14 hurdles with Westside.
Alan was on top form on Tuesday and won gold. There was no time to rest as the All Ireland was held on Saturday in Athlone.
Alan put another great performance and finished third overall to reach the International competition in Glasgow on the weekend of November 10 to represent Ireland against England, Scotland and Wales. His teacher and athletics trainer Maura Reid missed the All Ireland due taking the college first year students to Old Trafford for their game against Tottenham.
Such is Alan’s dedication to running, his mother Ann takes him to Carlow two nights a week for training with his coach, Billy Delaney.
Alan’s late father, Shay Miley, was a renowned footballer for Dunlavin, and that talent has certainly been passed down through the generations.
“All in Wicklow Community Games congratulate Alan and his family on the wonderful achievement and send good wishes for Glasgow and look forward to Alan competing in Community Games,” said a spokesperson for Wicklow Community Games.
Well done to Joe Prendergast from Temple Carrie School, Greystones, who won the Leinster Minor boys and was second in the All Irelands and to all the competitors from Wicklow.
