Ashford score six of the best

Ashford Rovers hit FC Locomotiv for six on Sunday in their Andy McEvoy Premier 1 clash at Ballinalea Park.

The hosts ran out 6-2 winners, with Callum Pursey opening their account with a fine half-volley and Danny Byrne doubling their advantage.

Locomotiv pulled a goal back just before the break, but it was business as usual after the resumption with Danny Byrne heading to the net to restore the two-goal cushion.

To their credit, the visitors responded again, but Ashford closed out the game well, with Danny Byrne completing his hattrick from the penalty spot and Conor Brennan adding two superb strikes before the finish.

Newtown United fought back from falling two goals behind in the opening 15 minutes to earn a share of the spoils with St Peter’s after a 2-2 draw at Fassaroe.

Chad Ryan coolly converted a penalty to put the hosts in front, before turning provider to set up Ross O’Brien for their second.

Ryan Cahill pulled a goal back for the Magpies before the interval and Matthew Kennedy grabbed the equaliser midway through the second-half.

Roundwood AFC came out on top in a high-scoring encounter with Arklow Celtic, winning 5-3 thanks to doubles from David Kavanagh and Patrick Woods and a goal from Keane Murphy, with Lee Doyle, Danny Lai and Paddy Walker replying for Celtic.

Meanwhile, Carnew AFC moved to the top of the table thanks to a 3-1 win over Dynamo Dublin (see focus match), while Tallaght City saw off Rathnew AFC 3-0.

Pat O’Toole Division 1B

Adam Browne was the match winner for St. Patrick’s AFC on Sunday, netting a double to help his side to a 3-1 win over Bohs Supporters Club in the Pat O’Toole Division 1B.

Ryan O’Leary got the other goal for the Avoca outfit.

Arklow United stormed to a 9-0 victory over Old Court Celtic at Ferndale Park with Jonny Quinn and Niall Higgins both contributi­ng hat-tricks, Zach Kilbride adding a double and Mark Wixted converting a penalty.

Glencormac fought back from a two-goal deficit to earn a share of the spoils against Ashford Rovers. Two headers from Paul Duffy looked to have Rovers in control but Sam O’Callaghan pulled a goal back before the break to give the Glens a real foothold in the game.

Nathan Watters headed the equaliser to complete the fightback, but there was more drama to come, with Ashford goalkeeper Paul Conyard stopping a last minute penalty, the second spot-kick he saved in the match.

Wicklow Town proved too good for Greystones United, winning 5-2 with goals from Richard Murphy, Hugh Humby, Reece Kelly, Brian Byrne and Jack Kelly, with Anthony Fermoyle replying with a double.

Rathnew ran out comfortabl­e 4-0 winners over Frankfort FC, with Evan Doyle (two), Jordan Quinn and Paddy Owens scoring for the Village.

Elsewhere, Templeogue United overcame Knockmitte­n United 4-2.

Division 3

Ballywaltr­im FC picked up three points on Sunday when they got the better of Carnew AFC in their Division 3 clash.

Tony Kiernan, Eoin McMahon and Ross O’Brien hit the back of the net in a 3-1 victory, with James Fitzgerald replying for Carnew.

Arklow Celtic had to come from two goals behind to earn a point against Aughrim Rangers. Shane O’Keeffe and Daniel O’Hare put the visitors two goals to the good, but back came Arklow, with Jason Rowlands halving the deficit and John Cushe converting a penalty to complete the comeback.

Dearg Celtic earned a 3-1 win away to Wicklow Town, thanks to goals from Michael Murphy (two) and Craig Browne with David O’Connor scoring for the hosts.
