Everyday things are inspiriations for Bray’s David
A WICKLOW ARTIST who turns everyday experiences such as hanging out the laundry into fresh and exciting sculptures is set to be showcased at Ireland’s premier art fair Art Source, in the RDS from November 10 to 12.
Over 15,000 people are expected to attend the year’s biggest art show, which will also give Irish art lovers the unique chance to get their hands on 100 pieces of original artwork for €100 each on a first-come, first-served basis.
From his Bray studio, fine art sculptor David McGlynn combines traditional bronze metalwork with splashes of vivid colour in works that elevate the ordinary into art.
‘It was only when I started breaking free of traditional ideas and taking risks with the work that people really started to appreciate it,’ said David.
His bronze works take a humorous and occasionally irreverent look at everyday objects and experiences with sculptures including a lavatory growing out of a tree, lines of colourful fluttering laundry and children clutching bunches of brightly-coloured balloons.
‘I like it when people can relate to the work quite quickly, it gives them a lift and maybe pause for thought, it is not too lofty and yet it is a piece of art.’
David, who has exhibited and sold his work in places as far away as Helsinki, China and Vietnam, believes in pushing out the boundaries of traditional bronze sculpture.
‘It is only those who have broken the rules who have refreshed the world of art. It is important to question what is allowed and over the years people begin to see the real value in that,’ he said.
This year’s Art Source sold out in record time and features over 130 contemporary artists and 20 Irish and international galleries gathering together to showcase painting, sculpture, photography, illustration, prints and ceramic art.
Admission to Art Source is €10 for adults, €8 for OAPs. Admission for children under 16 is free only if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
