Super Seán finishes with real flourish
Allen ends his boxing career in style
SEAN Allen capped his boxing career with a fine exhibition against Olympian Darren O’Neill from Paulstown in the Arklow Bay Hotel last Friday night.
Both boxers traded punches non-stop for the three rounds and the crowd thoroughly enjoyed the performance.
After the final bell Arklow Boxing Club made a special presentation to Sean in appreciation of all his work and in appreciation of the Irish titles he won for the club during his career.
Sean also represented An Garda Siochana at international level and boxed in world championships in U.S.A.
Sean then made a presentation from the club to Head Coach Jim Moore in appreciation of his years of coaching at the club.
Jim says that MAYBE in the not too distant future another Sean Allen (7) may take up the tradition of the Allen family which started with Seanie Allen boxing for Marian arts boxing club in Arklow in the 50s.
In another presentation Leanne Doyle was presented with the Peter Kenny memorial trophy as the most successful boxer in 2016, winning Irish and Leinster titles.
In addition to the main event the supporters were treated to a full programme of boxing starting in a three-way exhibition between Luke Mulhall, Paul Moore, and Ross Farrell all from the Arklow club.
This was necessary as their opponents did not turn on the night. All three performed great in an entertaining bout.
Darragh O’Connor started well against Darragh Duncan Rochford by using his long jab but in the second round he fell behind and lost on a split decision.
Josh Browne had a tremendous battle against James Maguire of Holy Family Drogheda.
Maguire tried to keep Josh at long range but the Arklow boxer continued to take the fight to the Drogheda boxer to earn a split decision.
Michael Moorehouse boxed impressively against Nathen Tyrrell of Sacre Couer. Michael scored with good Jabs and fast combinations to win by unanimous decision.
In the only female contest of the night Niamh Malloy from Arklow showed star quality against Roisin Balph of Sacre Couer.
The Arklow debutant scored at will with both hands and was particularly impressive with her straight right. Niamh won a unanimous decision.
Sean Fleming came up against an in form Cameron Crichton from Rochford Bridge.
While Sean tried to take the fight to the Rochford Bridge boxer he was caught with long range punches and Crichton won on unanimous decision.
Sean Tyndall won his bout by picking off Jack Byrne from Rochford Bridge with solid combinations to win unanimously.
Daniel Fox (whose opponent didn’t turn up) had an interesting exhibition with Damian Abiloga and both clubmates gave their all.
Owen Moore was impressive when outpointing Gerry Nevin of Holy Family. When the Drogheda boy attacked he was caught with fast combinations by Moore who was a clear winner.
Josh Whitmore gave a fine demonstration of power punching against Adam Farrell of Holy Family, catching the Drogheda boxer with solid rights to head and body. Josh won a unanimous decision.
Jason Breen was Arklow’s unluckiest boxer to lose a split decision to Luke Mooney from Glasnevin.
Jason scored well with solid shots to the head and seemed to have done enough but two judges went for the Dublin boxer.
Matthew Tyndall got Arklow back on track against David Nevin from Holy Family.
Matthew scored with solid hooks to the head and body to win all three rounds.
Sean Crowley was also very impressive when outpointing fellow Irish champion Christian O’Brien from Glasnevin.
Sean kept O Brien at long range and scored with solid right hands to win all three rounds.
In the final bout Fergal Redmond had a good win against Dillon Phibbs of Glasnevin. Fergal beat the Dublin boxer to the punch in all three rounds
Arklow have a team of boxers taking part in a new competition, The Wexford Box Cup next weekend.
The team are Michael Moorehouse, Sean Fleming, Damien Abiloga, Daniel Feokrytova, Daniel Fox , Sean Tyndall, Amber Byrne, Tegan Farrell, Matthew Tyndall, Sean Crowley, Padraig Keogh, Owen Moore, Jason Breen, Josh Whitmore.
The boxing will take place over three days Friday, Saturday and Sunday, in St Ibar’s Club in Wexford.
