Plan to reopen Wicklow Town Hall to public ‘very, very soon’

-

Wicklow Municipal District staff will soon be moving back into the Town Hall.

The property in Market Square was vacant from May 2014 following the last local elections and the abolishment of all town councils.

Initially, Wicklow County Council sought expressions of interest from groups keen to occupy the premises, but the local authority ended up withdrawing from the whole process.

Earlier this year financial management staff moved from the County Buildings into a section of the town hall but the building still remained closed to the public.

At the Wicklow Municipal District meeting on Monday, District Manager, Joe Lane, confirmed that services provided by Wicklow Municipal District would be moving back to the Town Hall, after questioning from Cllr Gail Dunne.

‘I hear rumours we are meant to be moving back up to the Town Hall. I think that would be great to see. All the other four Municipal Districts in Wicklow have their own Town Halls, all except Wicklow Municipal District.

‘Instead we have to have our meetings here in the County Buildings. I think now is the time we were back. There will be some use of the building and the public will be able to drop in to avail of services. That end of town in Market Square needs a bit of life to it and this would be a real boost,’ said Cllr Dunne.

Mr Lane wouldn’t be drawn on a precise time-line but did say the move was imminent.

‘It’s very close. It will happen soon, Very, very soon.’
