Relaunched LEADER programme will help ‘strengthen rural communities’

-

THE LEADER programme was relaunched in the Glenview Hotel last Tuesday having undergone a number of recent changes.

The programme has returned to a more grassroots approach to development.

Speaking at the relaunch, Cllr Grainne McLoughlin, Chair of the LAG for the LEADER Programme said: ‘We are aware that there are many groups and potential entrepreneurs that are ready to avail of this funding, but may have been put off by the onerous amount of work involved.

‘I am delighted to be able to announce that the process is now easier.

‘ Timed specific and themed calls have been replaced by a system of rolling calls, the same system that was in place for previous programmes,’ said Cllr McLoughlin.

The three main themes for funding are: rural economic development, social inclusion and rural environment.

Projects can be funded under these themes once they involve rural tourism, enterprise development and job creation, rural towns, basic services for hard to reach communities, rural youth, protection and sustainable use of water resources, protection and improvement of biodiversity ad the development of renewable energy.

Brian Carty, CEO of County Wicklow Partnership, said LEADER’s aim was to strengthen the rural economy.

‘LEADER depends on the voluntary efforts of the community and on the innovation of entrepreneurs. If you are a community group with an idea, or someone with a business idea, or a business wishing to upscale, then get in touch with us to see how we can help you.

‘We are holding information workshops for those interested in making an application. Everyone is welcome,’ said Mr McCarty.
