Settlement in Berkeley tragedy suit

-

A settlement has been reached of all claims against a number of parties following the Berkeley balcony collapse which killed six students and injured another seven.

Shankill native Lorcan Miller was one of five Irish students and one Irish-American student who died in the accident in June 2015.

Dublin native Olivia Burke, who also lost her life, was an intern at East Coast FM’s Bray studio during her studies.

The others who died in the tragedy on June 16 were Eimear Walsh, Niccolai Schuster, Eoghan Culligan, and Olivia’s cousin Ashley Donohoe.

Seven other people were seriously injured in the balcony collapse which happened during a 21st. The young people were in California on their J1 visas.

Walk up Law Office released a statement confirming confidential settlements had been reached in all claims against BlackRock Realty Advisors and Greystar RS California, Inc and their related affiliates.

‘BlackRock and Greystar have adopted policies and procedures regarding the inspections of balconies on the properties that they own or manage on a regularly scheduled basis,’ read the statement.

‘ The parties also have agreed to work to promote greater awareness of balcony safety issues and take appropriate actions to prevent future tragedies of this nature.’

A report earlier this year highlighted problems with water proofing and dry rot damage at the complex.
