Sporting saga hits the stage

-

WHILE THE GAA normally brings us drama on the pitch, its the stage where a small, rural club comes under the spotlight this week.

Blessington’s Richard Lynch will perform his show ‘Face the Short Kick Out’ in the Imaal Hall, Dunlavin, this Friday night, November 24, in aid of Dunlavin GAA Club.

In 1950s Ireland, a split in the local club sees a second club formed in the parish and a football match played that resonates to this very day.

Now, as Kilkeeran GAA Club prepares to open its new state of the art clubhouse, sixty-something-year-old Sonny Halpin hopes to lay the ghosts of the past to rest as he recounts the club’s history from its earliest years to the present day.

He conjures up memories of a host of colourful characters, including a larger than life trainer; an unorthodox referee; Barney McDonald, who played when it was ‘dangerous to play’; The Bummer Donnelly, who like a few pints the night before a match; and the colourful Mam- my watching from the sidelines as her five sons risked life and limb for the club and who put a special kind of fear into others, including the referee.

‘Face the Short Kick Out’ will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday in the Imaal Hall.

Tickets cost €15 and are available from Ed’s Fruit and Veg in Dunlavin or by calling either James on 085 1274139 or Louise on 087 2236216.
