Magpies hold on for victory

Newtown United held off a fightback from FC Lokomotiv to take the points from a topsy-turvy Andy McEvoy Premier 1 encounter on Sunday.

The Magpies raced into a 3-0 advantage inside the opening half an hour, with Neilly Martin firing them in front with a spectucula­r 25-yard drive and Evan Moran and Martin Williams adding to their tally. Lokomotiv pulled one back before half-time and scored again early in the second-half to crank up the pressure on Newtown but they held out to take the points.

A Jamie Kelly hat-trick helped St Peter’s FC to a 4-1 win over Rathnew. The Village actually broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, but the Bray side finished strongly, with Jake Kane adding to Kelly’s treble.

Anthony Byrne, Callum Pursey, Danny Byrne, Karl Earls and Cian O hAnnáin got the goals for Ashford Rovers as they chalked up an impressive 5-1 win over Roundwood AFC.

Pat O’Toole Division 1B

Nathan Watters helped himself to hat-trick for Glencormac United as they moved to the top of the Pat O’Toole Division 1B table with a 5-1 away win over Frankfort FC. Sam Kerr and Ian Devlin got the other goals for the new table-toppers.

Jack Darcy and Caleb Devereux both netted hat-tricks for Arklow United as they overwhelme­d Rathnew 9-2. Niall Higgins chipped in with a double for the winners, with Richie Neary adding their other goal.

Greystones United also hit the back of the net nine times as they thrashed Old Court Celtic 9-3.

Jason Healy, Makuro Gberevie and Keith Sunderland all contribute­d doubles, while Kevin O’Rourke, Michael Batten and Anthony Fermoyle got a goal apiece.

St Patrick’s put in a five-star display against Knockmitte­n United, winning 5-0 with goals from Eugene Dunne (two), Ryan O’Leary, Andrew Doyle and Chris Arthur.

Elsewhere, Wicklow Town proved too strong for Ashford Rovers, winning 3-0 with John Connors, Jack Geraghty and Mark Darragh hitting the back of the net.

Division 3

Wicklow Town chalked up their third win from four games in Division 3, when outgunning Ballywaltr­im 7-4 on Sunday. Eoin McMahon (two), Luke Barry and Barry Golden got on the scoresheet for Ballywaltr­im but Town took the spoils thanks to a Paddy Murphy hat-trick and goals from David O’Connor, Harrison Okunbou, Sean O’Brien and Kyle Duffy.

Elsewhere, the referee was forced to abandon the game between Conary United and Aughrim Rangers after 35 minutes due to a player injury, and Deary Celtic and Arklow United drew 3-3 (see focus match).

John Tobin Youth League

Avonmore FC continued their flawless start to the John Tobin Youth League, making it six wins out of six with a 7-1 victory over Arklow Town.

Dean Carter bagged a hat-trick for the league leaders, while Oisin McGraynor, Dan Hagan, Cody Reid and Aayub Azmat added a goal apiece.

Kian Marah was the star man for Ashford Rovers as he scored five times in their 6-2 win away to Aughrim. Jamie Hernandez, Christian Roche and Adam Lennon got the goals for Arklow United as they beat Wicklow Rovers A 3-1, with Nathan Sullivan replying.
