PRIMARY SCHOOLS TRANSITION

Teachers and pupils from the four ‘feeder/catchment’ area schools will visit Coláiste Chraobh Abhann for a tour of the facilities and to participate in a programme of activities on Wednesday, November 22. This event is a continuation of a successful strategy adopted many years ago as part of our ‘Primary to Secondary School Transfer Programme’.

We welcome all our visitors to our school on Wednesday, and we hope that everyone will enjoy the opportunity to experience our excellent facilities, school ethos and atmosphere, quality of teaching and learning and quality of customer service that we provide for all our students and parents.

FRENCH EXCHANGE

We hope all our Transition Year and Fifth Year students who attended the French exchange from Thursday, November 17, to Monday, November 20, had a very enjoyable time and were able to greatly benefit from the French immersion with their host families.

This was a great opportunity to improve your French with native speakers and we are sure it will give you great confidence with improving your oral language skills.

Thanks to the French Department and teachers who organised and attended the trip with the students.

SCIENCE WEEK

From Monday, November 11, to Friday, November 17, Coláiste Chraobh Abhann celebrated Science Week throughout the school, with lunchtime demonstrations and daily brainteasers being presented each morning during tutor time. On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday there were demonstrations of biology, physics and chemistry for everyone to participate in.

On Friday, everyone enjoyed a selection of science based music that was played in the GP Area, while the winners from the week’s activities were announced.

A wonderful wall display in the GP Area also marked the occasion. Well done to the Science Department and to everyone who was involved.

SENIOR GIRLS’ GAELIC

The CCA Senior Girls’ Gaelic took on CCM on Tuesday, November 14, in a fiercely fought contest. CCA started very well with a point in the first minute from Lucy Rooney, but CCM responded defiantly with two goals of their own in the first half.

Undaunted, CCA came out very strongly in the second half, following an inspirational talk from their team captain Laoise Cullen. Rachel Carthy, Kerryann Hamilton and Aoife Murtagh worked extremely well together to finish with a very convincing win, with a final score of CCA 4-17, CCM 2-2.

The referee commended many of our girls for their skill and performance. Well done to Ms Ward, Ms Nolan and the team on their great effort and victory.

JUNIOR GIRLS’ SOCCER

CCA Junior Girls’ Soccer team took on Gorey Community College in Kilcoole on Friday, November 11. On the day Gorey were a far superior team with a convincing win of 8-1. However, the team never gave up and this spirit was typified by Aisling Goff in second year who played her heart out till the final whistle.

A big thank you to Adam Gallagher and Ciara Dease from TY who have been coaching the girls since September.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

CCA under-16s Basketball Team had a very convincing win over St Killian’s in the league on November 13.

This under-16 team have been growing in confidence and ability with every single game, and this is a remarkable win considering the team was assembled just a little over a month ago. Well done to the team and their coach Mr Craig. CCA (48) St Killian’s (9)

UNDER-19 - The under-19s CCA Basketball team played extremely well against a competitive St Killian’s outfit in the league, and were unlucky to lose out by a few baskets by the end of the match. CCA were looking very comfortable in the first two quarters, but unfortunately, they were chasing the game entering the fourth quarter.

Despite the loss, this was a great display of determination and school spirit shown by the entire team. CCA (30) St Killian’s (41)

UNDER-15 BOYS’ SOCCER

CCA took on CCM in an under-15s clash in the Cup on Wednesday, November 15.

The final score was a heavy defeat for CCA, however the score fails to reflect this amazing performance from a very talented CCA under-15s team. CCAs John Paul Nolan marked a fantastic first half performance with an early goal and the two teams had it all to play for at half time at one a piece.

Unfortunately, a couple of early second half goals resulted in an onslaught from CCM and the game finished 4-1. There was a marked improvement in the performance by CCA compared to the last time we faced CCM, but unfortunately the score suggests a different story.

WORK PLACEMENT

5KRE will begin their two-week work placement on Monday, November 20. We hope this will be a very beneficial experience for all students involved.

On Wednesday, November 22, the remaining Fifth Year students will participate in a one-day work shadowing placement with their chosen employer with which is part of the LCVP students’ portfolio.

Mr Halpin wishes to remind all fifth Year students to make sure that the employers’ contact details have been signed and submitted to the school on time. We hope all our students gain an insight into the world of work through this day’s work placement.
