Santa and his elves join the party!
THE people of Greystones gathered to welcome Santa and celebrate the turning on of their Christmas lights last weekend.
Burnaby Park was at the heart of the event last Sunday evening, with a stage set up from which to herald the start of the festive season.
The celebration included a short ecumenical service and the singing of carols. Local clergy read ‘ The Spirit of Christmas’ to the audience.
The choir from Templecarrig Secondary School led the singing, with most of the crowd joining in.
Santa arrived on a horse-drawn sleigh, much to the excitement of the boys and girls and their families.
Cathaoirleach of Greystones Municipal District Gerry Walsh addressed everyone there, and thanked them for coming.
Committee member Danica Murphy counted down to the big moment that lit up the town, before Santa, the man of the hour, arrived to see the boys and girls.
The event was organised by the Greystones 2020 group in conjunction with the Community Affairs Committee of Greystones Municipal District. Prizes were handed out for the best costumes on the night, and there were plenty of free hats and sweets to go around, donated by Ross McParland of Greystones Theatre.
Members of the coast guard as well as other residents of Greystones volunteered as stewards for the event.
