Lions supporting the lifeboats

Sugarloaf Lions presented a cheque to the RNLI recently for €1,500. The money was raised by the club and Greystones Sailing club at their recent table quiz.

Tom O’Sulllivan, president of Sugarloaf Lions, was delighted to present the money to Joe Taylor of the RNLI.

There was great support at the quiz with representa­tion from members of both clubs.

The quiz was held at the sailing club early in November.

The north Wicklow RNLI fundraisin­g branch of Greystones and Newtown is dedicating to supporting the lifeboat in Wicklow Town.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea and is funded by charitable donations.

Wicklow RNLI Lifeboat Station was establishe­d in 1857, the first lifeboat was a 30 foot rowing boat called Dauntless. Today the Station has 2 lifeboats crewed by local volunteers. RNLB Annie Blaker is a Tyne Class all weather lifeboat and has been on station at Wicklow since 1989. RNLB Sheringham Shantymen is a D class (IB-1) inshore lifeboat and was funded by a Norfolk folk Group . The volunteer crew are on call 24 hours a day 365 days of the year, ready to go to sea to save those in peril.

Meanwhile, Sugarloaf Lions will host a Christmas lunch and fashion show today (Wednesday), in Greystones Golf Club form 12.30 p.m.

Local boutiques will display fashions for female and male models drawn from the Sugarloaf Lions Club.

Over 100 people are expected to attend the event.
