GREYSTONES WEXFORD WDS 17 17

TWO Sophie Carr tries helped Greystones Women to a hard fought draw against visitors Wexford Wanderers at Dr Hickey Park last Sunday in round 11 of the Womens Leinster League Division 3.

Greystones were looking to get 2018 off to a good start and knew they would be up against a strong Wexford team who travelled with the intention of maintaining their position in a league play-off spot whilst the hosts were looking to build on some promising pre-Christmas performances to climb up from their second from bottom placing.

Greystones started the match at a frantic pace playing with a strong wind in their backs and quickly settling into the game.

The early exchanges belied the distance between sides in the league table and despite pressure from both sides the game remained scoreless until 20 minutes when Wexford Wanderers sneaked in for their opening try converted from in front of the posts.

This advantage was not to last for long as straight from the restart Greystones seized the initiative and just three minutes later Sophie Carr forced her way over from close to the line following sustained Greystones pressure.

She then stepped up to convert her own score to level the scores.

The defences remained on top as both sides probed and looked for the breakthrough score before half-time with Wexford getting the break to run in a try on the stroke of half time to leave the score 12 - 7 at the break.

Following the restart and playing against the strong wind Greystones took the game to Wexford.

The outstanding Kristine McMahon who was consistently making ground through the Wexford defensive line broke clear from the twenty two metre line to cross the whitewash.

Carr’s difficult conversion effort fell short.

In a game involving two evenly matched sides Wexford grabbed the advantage with their third try of the afternoon but Greystones were to have the last word when once again Sophie Carr finished a forward move and fought her way over the line from close quarters to tie the game at 17-17.

oth teams played out a tense final ten minutes to leave honours even at the death.

Greystones Women travel to Navan next Sunday to face the side one place above them in the league brimming with confidence from this performance seeking another upward step.
