DÍOSPÓIREACHT

‘Should Donald Trump’s Twitter account be terminated?’ That’s the motion which a formidable team of Irish-speaking debaters from St Kilian’s CS took on recently, in the second round of the Leinster schools-debating competition ‘Díospóireacht an Phiarsaigh’. St Kilian’s were instructed to argue in favour of the motion, and competed in the four-team event, along with Loreto Foxrock, Loreto Bray, and Muckross Park.

St Kilian’s Niamh Ní Mhuirí, Bróna Ní Mhurchú, and Anna Mac Allister laid out their excellent arguments clearly, and cogently, and received high praise from the judges. In addition, they gave pointed rebuttals to the opposition’s arguments, to win extra points. The entire event was conducted ‘fríd meán na Gaeilge’, which, of course, is deserving of even greater credit.

Indeed, this same praise should be conferred on all four teams. Collectively, their delivery was excellent. The quality of language used was outstanding. Moreover, the intellectual vigour of their arguments, on both sides, were superb.

In the close contest, the atmosphere was arresting, and entertaining. Everybody in attendance had a really, really enjoyable, and stimulating evening.

However, the judges did have to make a decision. St Kilian’s and Loreto Foxrock did not make it through, unfortunately, on this occassion. However, as already mentioned, the same two teams were particularly praised for their performance.

The St Kilian’s team are completely resolved to honing their skills even sharper, in order to re-enter the fray, and compete even more impressively next year.

After a great experience, all in St Kilian’s wish the two successful teams the very best of luck in the rounds ahead. Especially our friends in Loreto Bray.

A BIG ‘THANK YOU’ TO MR MAC

Cormaic for his sterling work with the debating team ‘as Gaeilge’, and well done to the team for their hard work and excellent delivery.

TY NEWS

Student Enterprise Awards – Transition year business classes are extremely busy with their mini-companies at the moment. We have a number of groups in the design stages and some are ready to sell. Oh Sew Craft, a company making all handmade products (including Christmas decorations) will hopefully represent St Kilian’s in the Student Enterprise Awards in March.

Bank Of Ireland – Transition year students will be taking part in the school bank in the new year. Representatives for the bank will be in school next week to interview students and choose the school bank team.

Young Social Innovators – Our young social innovators are currently working very hard on the project on accessibility. They want to make our school more universally accessible. They have conducted an audit of the school and plan to implement some changes in the new year. Our YSI students were also very busy in Aldi in November selling Angels for the Irish Wheelchair Association Angel days. They raised €1510.20 and are now involved in the Wheelchair Basketball tournament with the IWA Some of the students also attended a talk in Rehab.

Care by a very inspirational person named Tracey McCann, so thanks to Aoife in RehabCare for organising that and we are looking forward to volunteering there in the new year.

LEAVING CERT APPLIED

Leaving Cert Applied students have been extremely busy this term with tasks and assignments. In Social Education class we have had a number of speakers in to talk to the students about the various contemporary issues that they are doing tasks on. We have had a speaker from AA and someone from BodyWhys with many more to come in the new year. In VPG class, students are not long back from work experience and 5th year students have recently completed mock interviews with representatives from Bank of Ireland, so many thanks to them for coming in to help out with that.

As always, all busy in Ms. Brophy’s very innovative and socially aware classes. Thanks to her for the updates on all their recent activities and the very best of luck to all of them with their projects in 2018.
