Deathknellfor Arklowpayparking
January 1989
THOUGH car-park charges are no longer being implemented in Arklow, the local Councillors still have to go through the legal formalities of abolishing them.
Last Friday night the Councillors approved of amended car-park bye-laws which exclude the pay-parking concept.
A public notice of intention to amend the bye-laws will now be published to see if there are any objections, and then the amended car-park bye-laws will be sent to the Minister for sanction.
Cllr Vincent McElheron said that the Traders Association had indicated that they favoured one-hour parking restriction on Main Street with charges.
He was of the view that a two-hour parking restriction would be more appropriate.
He said that the Traders had indicated to the Council’s traffic sub-committee that they would not object to a disc parking system on the Main Street.
However, Cllr Denis Kinsella said that he certainly would object to the introduction of any type of parking fee in Arklow.
He said that the Council should learn from the mistake it made last year.
They were a small country town srtiving to do business and others striving to go about their business.
The traders were not running the town: it was the council which took the decisions.
