BOOK LAUNCH

A new local history book has just been published entitled ‘Aghowle – Where the Divil Ate the Tinker’ by local woman Margaret Connolly.

This book tells the history of the townland of Aghowle which lies about four miles from Ashford on the slopes of Carrick Mountain, and is where Margaret grew up during the 1960s and 1970s. The book records the story of the close – knit farming community that lived in the townland for centuries right up till the early 1970s.

Margaret is launching her book on tonight Wednesday, January 17, in Chester Beatty’s Ashford at 8 p.m. and all are welcome. There will be readings from the book at the launch.

The book is currently available from Ann Duffy’s Florist shop in Newtownmou­ntkennedy, Bridge Street Books in Wicklow town, McCoy’s shop in Laragh, and Avondale Sports shop Main Street Rathdrum and the Green Room Florists in Roundwood.

LOTTO RESULTS

Congratula­tions to Leo and Lilly Kavanagh, who scooped the jackpot of €19,000 in last week’s draw. The numbers drawn were 2, 5, 20 and 28. YOGA CLASS

Yoga classes will resume in Roundwood Parish Centre on Thursday, January 25, 7.30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Class will include: Asana – physical stretches for flexibilit­y. Yoga Nidra – deep relaxation. MEDJUGORJE

COMMUNITY GAMES

The Roundwood Community Games AGM will take place Monday, January 22, in Kavanagh’s Lounge at 9 p.m. We will be planning out this year’s activities so anyone with a particular area of interest or would like to give some time please come along to the meeting.

Our annual fundraisin­g bag pack which took place on Friday and Saturday, December 15, and 16, in Dunnes Stores, Newtown was a great success with a grand total of €1,080 been raised.

ART CLASSES

Roundwood and District Community Council with the support of the Community Education Service of Kildare and Wicklow Education and Training Board are running a 10-week art class in Roundwood Parish Hall starting Monday, January 22. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Roundwood Variety Group presents Beauty and the Beast on the Friday the 26th, Saturday and Sunday, January 27, and 28. Shows will be at 8 p.m. on the Friday and Saturday night with a 3 p.m. matinee on the Saturday and Sunday. DIAMOND BRIDGE CLUB

In the first competitio­n for 2018 Molly Byrne, Rachel Judd, Brid Clancy and Monica Brady shared first/second for North/South, and third place went to Judy Skates and Rowena Brady. East West winners were Teresa Brady and Marion Davies second Bridie Nolan and Nancy O’Brien and third Paddy O’Brien and Rory Egan.

Top five places in final league of 2017 were Nancy OBrien, Paddy O’Brien, Maura Gaskin, Brid Clancy and Bridie Nolan respective­ly.

002 BRIDGE CLUB

Maria Magee and Rowena Brady got 2018 off to a good start by taking first place for North/ South joint second/third were Catherine McGillycud­dy, Nancy O’Brien, Molly Byrne and Rachel Judd. Teresa Leahy and Marion Davis continued their winning streak by taking first place once again for East/West and joint second/third were Kitty Heslin and John Loscher and Bridie Nolan and Maura Gaskin.

Paddy O’Brien, June Digby, Liz Belton Ger Lenihan and Kitty Heslin were the top five in our final league of 2017.

ROUNDWOOD DANCE

Next Roundwood Parish Hall Dance is on Friday, January 19, from 9 p.m. till midnight. Refreshmen­ts on the night. Music by John Flood.

LOURDES PILGRIMAGE

There will be a pilgrimage to Lourdes from Roundwood in September 2018. Names and €200 deposit before January 15 to Susan at 087 6273032. A pilgrimage to Knock will be on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 8. More on both pilgrimage­s at a later date.

ROUNDWOOD MEN’S SHED

We have a lovely couch with matching armchairs in the Shed but they are taking up too much room. Talk to one of the Shedders or call 086 8650588 if you are interested.

CEILI DANCING LESSONS

Adult ceili dancing classes are held every Wednesday night in the parish hall from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Learn to solo dance and also group dances under the tuition of Aoife, Cian and Eimear and have great fun learning.

MONEYSTOWN CENTRE

Moneystown Community Centre Cards will continue as usual on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. while our Moneystown Dance will return on Friday, March 9, Tuesday morning badminton continues from 9.30 a.m. beginners always welcome. Some rackets are available.

WALKING CLUB

The Roundwood Whizzers Walking Group are back in action every Wednesday evening meeting at 7 p.m. at the Coach House car park. Everyone welcome to walk at your own pace for approximat­ely one hour in and around Roundwood village.

WHIST RESULTS
