Preparations get under way for Bray Air Display

- By ESTHER HAYDEN

PREPARATIONS are under way for this year’s award-wining Bray Air Display.

The display, which is supported by the Irish Aviation Authority, will take place on Saturday, July 28, and Sunday, July 29.

This will be the 13th year of the air display which has grown to a two-day event which attracted 140,000 people to Bray last year. The event, which is renowned as one of Europe’s best air displays and a firm family favourite in the summer festival calendar, was recognised as ‘Best Festival/Event Experience (large)’ at the prestigious, national Irish Tourism Industry Awards 2017.

It also won silver in the recent ‘Best Tourism Initiative’ category at the All-Ireland Community and Council Awards.

This year’s event promises to be another awe-inspiring display and details of the lineup will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Sé Pardy, Director of Bray Air Display, said: ‘We’re looking forward to another amazing event with a line-up of some of the very best aerobatic performers in the world. Bray Air Display has a reputation for thrilling spectators year in, year out and I’m confident that this year’s event will be one of the best yet.’

Bray Air Display takes place thanks to the support of the Irish Aviation Authority as well as Wicklow County Council and Bray.ie. It is also supported by a dedicated group of volunteers without whose time and expertise the event would not succeed.

As well as gravity-defying manoeuvres, flyovers and aerobatic performances there will be lots of family fun on the ground from noon including a static display, food, craft and business village, helicopter pleasure flights, a fun fair and live music.

There was a huge turnout at the Knocktemple man’s funeral Mass, which took place in St Laurence O’Toole Church. Some believe that it may have been the largest funeral service ever held in Roundwood – a fitting tribute to a much-loved young man who made a lasting impression on all those lucky enough to have met him.

A guard of honour was formed by members of An Tóchar GAA Club, Roundwood District and Athletics Club and pupils from St Laurence O’Toole National School, where Sean used to teach.

Sean was the son of Noel and Marie Kavanagh and the brother of Edward, Noelie, Gerard, Enda and Michael.

He was completely dedicated to his family and there wasn’t a thing he wouldn’t do for them. He was also a proud uncle to his four nephews, who he absolutely adored.

He qualified as a teacher in 2014 and was soon carrying out relief work at schools in Ashford, Laragh, Moneystown. Kilmacanogue, Money- stown and Rathdrum, touching a lot of lives in the process.

He was immensely proud when he was appointed a teacher at St Laurence O’Toole National School in Roundwood, the same school where he received his primary school education.

Sean always loved woodwork, from his young days right up to adulthood, and was a much-valued member of Roundwood and District Athletic Club, where he coached other members. A fine runner, he represented the club with great distinction for many years.

He was also an avid fan of his much-loved Manchester United and enjoyed Formula One racing.

As a teacher and coach, he was greatly loved by all the children he worked with. He was caring, patient, kind, encouraging and always generous with his time.

His warm smile and gentle nature will be missed by all who knew him.

Roundwood ground to a halt for Sean’s funeral as the larger community grouped around the Kavanagh family united in grief.

Sean is much-missed by his parents, Marie and Noel, his brothers Edward, Noelie, Gerard, Enda and Michael, his sister-in-law Suzanne, nephews, aunts, uncles, relatives and wide circle of friends.
