Ambassador and Archbishop visit Bray
TWO events were held in Bray last week to celebrate the special relationship held between Germany and County Wicklow.
Archbishop Diarmuid Martin attended a meeting of the Irish- German Society of County Wicklow while the German Ambassador Deike Potzel paid a visit to Loreto.
The school visit on Friday, February 23, was to celebrate a new partnership between Loreto College in Bray and the Marie Ward School in Wurzburg.
Chairman of the Irish- German Society of County Wicklow George Jones said that this third partnership, in addition to those with St Kilian’s in Bray and Colaiste Chraobh Abhann in Kilcoole will start in March.
Mr Jones thanked all of the teachers at both schools for their efforts in bringing this about.
Ms Potzel received a very warm welcome at the Bray school and was delighted to meet the students.
‘Ambassador Potzel, who only presented her credentials to the President in December, has made it clear she wishes to be a very active representatives of the German Government and I am sure we will see a lot more of her in view of our very successful partnership with Wurzburg,’ said Mr Jones.
The following Monday evening, Archbishop Martin attended the society meeting at Bray Town Hall.
‘Dr Martin was guest of the Diocese of Wurzburg during the Kiliani Fest in July 2017 and he gave a talk to a general audience in Wurzburg on the topic “The Challenge for the Church in the 21st Century”,’’ said Mr Jones.
Dr Martin spoke to members and non-members at the meeting, where he was presented with a painting of the tower at Glendalough.
