- BY MYLES BUCHANAN

GARDAI were involved in a tense stand-off in Glenealy last week after they were called out to a domestic incident involving a man with a legally-held firearm.

The dramatic scenes on Tuesday, March 6, involved the armed Garda Regional Support Unit and a hostage negotiator was also requested.

Wicklow Garda Station received a call at 7 p.m. that evening reporting a male in possession of a firearm inside a private property in Glenealy village.

Local gardaí immediately raced to the scene, while the Garda Regional Support Unit was also dispatched.

All approach roads to Glenealy were closed to traffic while gardai attempted to engage with the man. The area surrounding the house where the incident was taking place was also cordoned off and surround- ed by gardaí.

The hostage negotiator communicated with the man for close to an hour before the matter was finally resolved.

The man in his forties then surrendered his firearm before he was arrested and brought to Wicklow Garda Station for questioning. He was released without charge and a file is currently being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. No weapons were discharged during the disturbance.
