MAMIE QUIRKE is the fourth member of her family to be President of Arklow Rugby Club, following in the footsteps of her father and two brothers.

Indeed, her father was a founding member of the rugby club in the town.

She was the first woman to ever sit on the executive com- mittee of the club in the early 1990s and is the second female President, taking the role from Diane Hunt Byrne.

“I was very honoured to be asked to be president of the club. They’re a great bunch of people, the majority of the people in the club love the game and they love supporting the game. They love coaching the kids. We have a big women’s section and it’s going very well.

“It’s all very positive, I love being president of the club. I find it deepens my connection with the club. I’ve been going to rugby matches since I was about eight years of age but I feel a much deeper connection with the club this year.”

One thing that she did not expect coming into the club is the amount of money needed to keep it going.

“Fundraising is very difficult in the club. To run a club is really expensive.”
