Game for women in Arklow

-

They have a number of initiatives and their latest fundraising event is a cooking demonstration by Kevin Dundon who is coming to the Arklow Bay Hotel on March 23rd.

The Amazons, the name of the senior ladies team, started back in 2010. For Mamie however women’s rugby didn’t start early enough.

“I would have loved to play rugby. I played one game when I was about 16, we played girls against the boys, a fun game. I played in a tag rugby tournament about eight years ago but, yeah, I would loved to have played.”

The women’s section is very active in the club and, like any club in any sport, are there in the background willing to do anything.

“They do so much to help out, if you need anything ask the women and they’ll do it. I’m not saying the men aren’t but the women are just brilliant. They’re doing very well in the league, they’re doing much better than the men this year.”

Looking towards the future, Mamie has one hope.

“I suppose it would be to secure more members so that we could have a first team and a second team. If we could promote the game of rugby for women in the town and show they how enjoyable it is and increase our membership that would be great.”
