NEWTOWN

Newtown GAA is driven by the incredible work carried out by many wonderful volunteers, young and old, male and female, from every single walk of life, some of who are listed below. Being involved in the GAA gives a sense of fulfilment which is unrivalled. It brings membership of the biggest club in Ireland, puts one right at the heart of Irish culture and provides a pastime for every member of the family. If you feel you can help out in any capacity for any period of time please get in touch with Dave McCormick or email secretarybng.newtown.wicklow@gaa. ie We are particularly looking for volunteers for U7 Go Games.

Congratulations to Dave McCormick who was elected to the role of Juvenile Chairman this week and to Sharon McCormick who was appointed as the new Children’s Officer. Some of the supporting current mentors/ coaches are:Girls:

Under-8/10: Ruth Prenderville, Dave McCormick, Ann-Marie Healy.

Under-12: Loretto Martin Under-14: Shay Power, Shayne Murphy & Bernie Power

Under-16: Philly and Ashling McDonald Boys:

Under-11: Peter Heffernan and Ruari Martin Under-13: Peter Heffernan and Ruari Martin and Pat Carthy

Under-15: Shane Mooney; Karl Carty, Glen Carthy

Under-17: In group team with Pearse Gaels (Kilcoole and Ashford)

Nursery (4-6-year-old): Dave McCormick Best of luck to the under-17s lads who are playing with Pearse Gaels this year and they have their first league match at Newtown on Friday, March 16.

Unfortunately the under-16 girls team panel is too low on numbers this year and the club are working with parents to find teams where they can play this year.

A Magpie legend, Jack Martin, passed away last week. Jack was left full-back on the 1964 championship winning team and also played on many Schweppes Cup winning teams. He was one of the most formidable defenders of his generation and was certainly not a player you wanted marking you. Our deepest condolences are with Kathleen, Denise and Anna. May he rest in peace

Membership fees are now due and again are one of the lowest in the county, there are no changes to the individual fees with juvenile family fee at €120 and adult family at €200.

The club would like some parents to walk with their kids in the St.Patrick’s Day Parade, leaving Gregorys Garage at 11.00 on Saturday morning.

Seven people matched three numbers in last weeks lotto, but no jackpot winner, this weeks jackpot rolled over to €5,000. Numbers drawn were 10, 15, 17, and 22.

Follow Newtown GAA on Twitter or Facebook. The club noticeboard is also located in the post office.

LARAGH

After the bad weather we’re back in the field Training every Tuesday and Thursdays at 8pm. Our next game is at home to Valleymount in two weeks. Hopefully we can get a few players back on the field for this match. Membership is now over due Alan can collect this at any training session.

We will be holding a registration day for our juveniles in the coming weeks. Everyone will be notified in advance.

All in the club send it’s deepest sympathies to the Cullen family on the sudden passing of Joe last week.

ÉIRE ÓG GREYSTONES

Lá Fhéile Pádraig faoi shéan is faoi mhaise daoibh go léir!

The club’s annual presentation Dinner Dance takes place in that very attractive venue which is the Greystones Golf Club on March 24.

The dinner is preceded by a prosecco reception which is timed for 7p.m. The revellers will be regaled thereafter with live music and a DJ. Tickets are a reasonable €35 and may be purchased from Daniel O’Connor or Mark Barry.

PEIL: The effects of the disruption caused to the schedule of games as set out in the master fixtures table have by this stage surely faded away so one can take it that matches are going ahead as indicated therein.

The Éire Óg fixtures for the next few weeks are: March 18th Senior Hurling, Éire Óg at home to Carnew 11a.m. Sunday March 25th Arklow Bay Hotel Div. 1A Football League at home to Coolkenno 11a.m. Saturday March 31st Wicklow Hire Div. 3 Football League away to Lacken 5p.m. Sunday April 1st Arklow Bay Hotel Div. 1A Football League away to AGB. Friday April 6th Arklow Bay Hotel Div. 1 Football League at home to Kilmac 8.15p.m. Sunday April 8th Wicklow Hire Div. 3 Football League at home to Enniskerry 11a.m.

Éire Óg has huge financial outgoings and is in a constant struggle to keep its financial head above stormy monetary waters.

The club’s lotto is a very important buoyancy aid and its cisteoir encourages any of you with the club’s interest at heart to consider, if not already doing so, purchasing a €2 tickets in its weekly draws.

This may be done online as detailed on www. eireoggreystones.com or by going directly to www.locallotto.ie/localhome. The pota óir at the moment stands at a very enticing 12K euro. As a matter of interest last week’s nos. drawn were 4, 18, 23, and 27 and the minor prizes were won by Rory Fallon and Paul Darcy

After a somewhat tentative start our under-14 camógs are beginning to find their feet in their division of the Dublin camogie leagues.

At the weekend they played host to Commercials in weather conditions which were not for shrinking violets – in modern parlance ‘snowflakes’ -, indeed the conditions were miserable enough to have challenged the resolve of the hardiest among them.

So the cailíní from both sides are to be commended not only for nor being deterred from playing but also for having mastered the conditions to the degree to which they did.

At under-14, point scoring is a measure of the skill level attained by the players and that Commercial scored three points and Éire Óg none shows that they were, as Galway hurling pundit Cyril Farrell would have it, a little more ‘wristy’ than ár gcailíní.

The Clocha Liatha girls all but offset this disadvantage with hugely committed and determined engagement. The final score was 3-3 to 3-0. The hosts had the visitors’ goals under siege for the last five minutes and came agonisingly close to equalising just as the referee was about to blow the final whistle.

A great performance overall from the cailíní with Bryanna having a stand-out performance among the backs and Aisling, Faith and Ellie accounting for the goals.

Peil na gcailíní. The notes were delighted to hear that three of our minor girls were included in the Cill Mhantáin team which played Laois on Sunday.

Juvenile coaches; The coiste of Éíre Óg is very anxious that the club’s underage players have the best of tuition. To this end they invited the very experienced Garrett Doyle to take charge of a few ‘Training for trainers’ sessions.

The first of these for players between seven and nine was held in our halla spóirt and this is to be followed very soon by one for those looking after children between the ages of four and six.
