Old photos and new paintings at show

-

BRAY and Greystones are the subjects of a mixed media exhibition of old photos, and more recent paintings and drawings, at Signal Arts Centre.

Greystones-based artist Graham Shepherd started his career as an art teacher, before moving into TV graphic design. He worked at RTE where he made animated title sequences at a time without computers, a difficult but rewarding activity.

Then followed a 10-year stint working for the BBC in London. There Graham encountered the beginning of electronic graphics. He ended his tenure there a head of news and current affairs graphics.

Returning to Ireland, he freelanced as a lecturer in art colleges. The bulk of his activity was developing modules for persons with a disability - hence the creation of a Horizon project called Art Access which had a wide reach in the realm of special needs. Graham then travelled and did some writing, but now has returned to painting, and resurrecting some older work, as well as re-appraising what kind of photography to engage with while also making some collages.

‘I see these activities in the same frame as bird watching or flying kites, so the process remains within the context of other things,’ he said.

‘Some images may be abrupt but the overall aim is to generate a sense of tranquillity and visual pleasure.’

The exhibition runs from Tuesday, April 3 until Sunday, April 15. An opening reception will take place on Friday, April 6 from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.
