PREMATURE END
Wicklow’s clash with Limerick won’t be played
MARTIN Fitzgerald is disappointed but not despondent at the GAA’s decision to cancel the remaining Division 4 fixtures.
Wicklow’s home clash with Limerick – previously postponed due to weather conditions – was still down for decision but the GAA has now brought the curtain down prematurely on the fourth tier as the outstanding matches can have no impact on promotion.
Fitzgerald was informed of the decision by e-mail on Monday, despite Wicklow’s best efforts to ensure that the meeting would go ahead.
A victory for John Evans’ footballers at Joule Park would have seen them leapfrog Limerick and possibly relegate them to eighth.
“We were trying to get it on. Limerick have their club championship this weekend and I don’t think they really wanted to come up here and play.
“It’s just one of those things. It is disappointing but it’s not the end of the world. It’s not life or death – it’s just a match.
“What can we do? We just have to get on with it.
“It’s a win/lose situation for both sides really”.
The fixture represented a final chance for Evans’ side to get a victory under their belt and possibly lift themselves off the foot of the table.
Instead, they finish as the lowest county in the country for the second year in a row.
Wicklow’s focus now turns to Sunday, May 13 – just 60 days away – and their Leinster championship opener against Offaly. Evans will hope that it is not the opening and closing of the Garden County’s provincial ambitions.
