Celtic make Aughrim pay the penalty

-

Wicklow Cup second round

Shamrock Celtic staged a remarkable fightback to edge past Aughrim Rangers in a dramatic penalty shoot-out in the second round of the Wicklow Cup on Sunday.

Rangers looked to be in control thanks to a double from Shaun Doyle and a goal from Daniel O’Hara, but a Glen McCarthy strike kick-started the Celtic revival.

Two goals in the last ten minutes from Stephen McGuinness and Liam Clarke made it 3-3 to force extra-time and Shamrock Celtic prevailed in the penalty shoot-out.

Avonmore FC also progressed by seeing off Arklow Celtic ‘B’ 4-2. The winners were four goals to the good before the hour mark, with Andrew Browne opening the scoring from the penalty spot and Kadir Arslan, Jacob Hamilton and Darren Beavor also hitting the back of the net.

Lee Doyle and Paddy Bergin managed to pull two goals back for Celtic, but it proved to be too little, too late.

Charlie O’Leary Cup

Danny Byrne was the main man for Ashford Rovers ‘A’ as they booked their place in the last 16 of the Charlie O’Leary Cup at the expense of St. Patrick’s AFC.

Byrne bagged a hat-trick in the game at Kilcashel, with Ryan Werder replying for the saints.

Elsewhere, Glencormac overcame Ashford Rovers ‘B’ 4-2 (see focus match).

Andy McEvoy Premier 1

Carnew AFC closed the gap on leaders Ashford Rovers, with a 4-1 win over Dynamo Dublin in their Andy McEvoy Premier Division clash on Sunday.

Cillian Gilligan helped himself to a double, with James Behan (penalty) and John Kavanagh chipping in with a goal apiece.

Newtown United and St. Peter’s FC had to settle for a share of the spoils after a 2-2 draw, with Dillon Carthy and Dean Odlum scoring for the Magpies and Killian O’Carroll and Tony Harris replying for the saints.

Lee Doyle bagged a double for Arklow Celtic as they saw off Roundwood AFC 4-2. David Kavanagh and Mark Doyle got their other goals, with Roundwood replying through Kevin Lynch and a Damian Johnson penalty.

Pat O’Toole Division 1B

Arklow United kept the pressure on Pat O’Toole Division 1B leaders Glencormac United with a 2-0 win over Wicklow Town AFC on Sunday.

Richie Neary and Stephen McManus got their goals.

Elsewhere, Kevin Bell (two) and David Molloy got on the scoresheet for Greystones United, but it wasn’t enough to take anything from the game as Templeogue United ran out 5-3 winners.

Division 3

Arklow United extended their advantage at the summit of Division 3 with a narrow win over Conary United on Sunday.

Chris Corrigan got the all-important goal in a 1-0 victory.

Dearg Celtic netted a magnificent seven without reply against Ballywaltrim FC, with Craig Browne contributing a hat-trick and Jordan O’Connor and Philip Murphy both bagging doubles.
