ENTERPRISE CHAMPIONS
Coláiste Chraobh Abhann were announced winners of the overall senior category in the Wicklow County Enterprise Final of the Student Enterprise Awards last week. The company Wild Wicklow Crafts, which was set up by transition year students Dylan Symes and Sam Ireland, produce bespoke handcrafted pieces such as mirrors, candle holders and chopping boards from bog oak. They will now go on to represent County Wicklow at the national finals in Croke Park on May 2.
CCA had further success in the junior section, taking four of the six trophies on offer.
Rebecca Carey and Saoirse O’Keeffe took the award for best product for their creative Pebble Pals. Harry Barry and Bradley Cullen won best business report for their wood coasters. Cara Attwood, Alexandra Adderly O’Brien and Julia Norman took the best display award for their Handy Helpers, while Ciara Short and Ellie Minto were awarded first runner-up for their fancy flames candles.
Another successful year for CCA Entrepreneurs and we wish Wild Wicklow Crafts every success in the national final.
DEBATING
The first semi-final of the first year debate took place on Friday, March 23, with 1RCG debating the motion ‘Animals should have the same rights as humans’ against one AWH Proposing the motion for 1AWH were captain Daniel Byrne, along with Aisling Molloy Kearns and Kaci Turner. The opposing team from 1RCG were Holly Doyle and Angel Royston led by captain Ryan Curran.
Judge Mr Creavin commended both teams on their Both excellent debates, awarding the winning team to 1RCG, and the best speaker being awarded to 1AWH captain Daniel Byrne. 1RCG will now face 1SHY or 1SWD in the final.
FRENCH DEBATING
On Friday, March 16, the finals of Les Joutes Oratoires 2018, the school French debating competition run in conjunction with the French Embassy, took place in Dublin’s Alliance Francaise.
CCAs Cormac Gilnagh was invited to receive a medal for Best Speaker during the tournament and attend a special reception.
It was an exciting evening for Cormac, his teammates and teachers as it was the school’s first time entering the competition. Well done to Cormac and the all the French Teachers that supported the students with this French debating competition.
PI DAY
The Maths Department celebrated Pi Day on Wednesday, March 20, with a large number of students taking up the challenge of seeing who could memorise the most Pi digits from memory.
Taylor Brandon from Second year won, by being able to recited an incredible 50 digits. However, the world record is still held by Akira Haraguchi from Japan, who over 16 hours memorised 100,000 digits of Pi back in 2006.
There was also a pie baking competition held in the school, with the best Pi designed cake being awarded to Michael Byrne from Second year. Congratulations to all involved.
LEAVING CERT ORALS
Best of luck to all our students involved in the Leaving Cert Irish and French Orals which will take place from the ninth to April 20.
