ÉIRE ÓG GREYSTONES

CAMOGIE - The Éire Óg Camógs’ visitors on Tuesday night, Lucan Sarsfields, bravely negotiated toll bridges and a hard Wick-exit border on their journey to Bóthar an Mhuilinn. Their journey paid dividends as they went away with the two points.

This, of course, was not the Sarsfields’ first team. Nevertheless, they showed themselves to be a well-drilled outfit, with some very good strikers and players who were in general excellent ag breith ar an sliotar san aer (fielders).

It was pleasing to see that while Lucan were the better team ár gcailíní were not that far behind.

The game was divided into quarters, with a water-break in each half: a very necessary strategy in what was a night of near-tropic temperatures.

The game was quite close to the three-quarter break but after that the visitors were very much in the driving seat and added substantially to their total.

The relative age profiles certainly told in this period. Ár gcamógs had to have derived great satisfaction from their hugely-improved skills and their team play. Their delivery of the ball was good and it was great to see the sliotar travel from end to end with a few pucks.

GRMA - The primrose resplendence of our recently-painted clubhouse is eye-catchingly complemented by the present bright sunshine. The surrounds have also been cleaned up.

The work involved meitheals over three weekends. John Keane, Cathaoirleach, extends a sincere go raibh maith agaibh to everyone who contributed his/her time and effort to the work.

He reserves special buíochas for Ray Barry and Matt Cranley who not only supervised the work but put their expertise into practice from an early hour on each of the three weekends.

CÚL CAMPS - Cúl Camp time is here again and Éire Óg will be hosting two camps, supervised by Darren Hayden, one in hurling and camogie, from July 16 to 20 inclusive, and one in football, for both cailíní and buachaillí, 23-27 July (cancellations only). The cost drops from €60 for a first child to €40 for a third.

MINOR FOOTBALL - Well done to the Wicklow minors who defeated Dublin in the Leinster League, 2-06 to 0-08. Three Éire Óg players – Shaun Cranley, Dara Devine and Fionn O’Carroll – are part of this panel.Three of the Éire Óg cailíní – Aoife McTeague, Megan Healy and Eva Roche – were on the county minor panel that travelled to Rennes in Brittany to take part in the Gallesie en Fête festival.

Because of the pride of the Bretons in their Celtic tradition, Gaelic games in general are developing an ever-growing profile in this region.

The players also conducted coaching workshops in a number of schools.

LOTTO - Holiday Time: time for relaxation. Unfortunately, also time for forgetting. Don’t include in your holiday forgets the Éire Óg Lotto, which stands at €12,000.

Tickets may be purchased online at eireoggreystones.com. Money makes the world go round and the Lotto income plays a majority part in keeping the wheels of Éire Óg turning. Mar sin, ceannaigh ticéad nó dhó.

Féile - The girls under-14 team along with their management team of Brian Foley, Sheena Moran, Bridget Campion and Grace Murphy travelled to Dundalk on Friday last to participate in Féile Peil na nÓg 2018.

Clan Na Gael Dundalk were our host club for the weekend and what fantastic hosts they were.

The girls’ first game was against Naomh Mairtin of Louth from which the girls had a hard fought win in coming out on top with a scoreline of 3-8 to 1-2.

Next up was a tough, aggressive encounter for our girls against St. Manchans of Offaly with our girls prevailing on a score of 1-9 to 1-3.

The girls had qualified for the quarter-final but the next match against Clan Na Gael of Louth would determine who topped the group. In this match, the girls battled hard but with a lot of missed chances came out on the wrong side of the final score 1-5 to 3-2.

Next up in the quarter-final the girls played Taghmon/Camross from Wexford; winning this one 3-2 to 0-6.

Onwards to the semi-final for the girls where they would play a very strong Knockainey side from Limerick, the match being played in St. Mary’s GAA Ardee.

Unfortunately, after playing their hearts out throughout the match, and the entire weekend, the girls had a heart-breaking defeat on a scoreline of 5-6 to 3-5. Knockainey proceeded to win the final.

The coaches are so proud of every single player on this panel who have trained and played so hard since February. Well done girls and management team from everybody at Baltinglass GAA Club.

Juniors - Away against Kiltegan on Thursday at 7.45pm.

Division 4 - Blessington Juniors beat Dunlavin away on Thursday last in Division 4. Final score: 1-10 to 0-06.

Best wishes to Ethan Cotter who was injured on the night.

Wicklow Minors – The Wicklow lads beat Dublin in Parnell Park last Wednesday with goals from Kevin Quinn and Eoin Darcy which helped Wicklow to a four-point win, 2-6 to 0-8.

Those two first-half goals had Wicklow six points to the good at the break, 2-4 to 0-4, and although they only managed two more points in a low-scoring second half, it was enough to see them home.

Wicklow’s win sees them leapfrog the Dubs into second place in Group 1, and victory in their final round robin match when they play already-qualified Meath on July 3 in Aughrim at 7.30pm will see them into the semis at Dublin’s expense.

Wicklow Ladies – Hard luck to the ladies and management who lost to Laois on Sunday in the Leinster Intermediate Championship Final in Netwatch Cullen Park, Carlow. Final score 2-13 to 0-13. Well done to our super club ladies Kim Connors and Shona O’Connor. Well done also to our young under-12 players Robyn Brennan and Leila Shannon who took part in an exhibition at the interval.

Under-10 girls – So proud of all our little under-10 girls on Saturday, June 30, who were brilliant in that heat. They played some great football, Meabh Doyle our super defender for the future, how she caught some of them balls I do not know. Well done. A win against a strong Kildare team, Milltown.

There’s no stopping these girls now, stars of the future. Michelle Trevor and Shauna. Thanks for the fab new gear which was kindly sponsored by Brian Carroll. All the girls really look the part now. Thanks a million Brian, I think the girls done the jersey proud. Juvenile boys

Under-11s – Under-11 Wicklow boys on Wednesday, June 27. Blue squad. The lads were at home to St Pats and played some nice football to produce great scores and won well. Few things to work on in training but well done to the lads.

White squad were away to St Pats. Tackling were excellent and they came away with a great win. Well done to coaches and parents for travelling on very warm night. Red squad were at home to Stratford/Grangecon and started like rockets and finished the same. Excellent scoring and team play and came away winning in the end.

Under-11 boys rescheduled games tonight Friday, June 29. Blue squad fielded nine players against Dunlavin and again played some very nice moving football and won out in the end.

White squad were away to Kilmac and despite battling right to the end lost by two scores. Special mention to Orlagh Murphy for playing this game with us tonight at very short notice.

Red squad - what can i say! it’s great to see younger players step up when asked to fulfill fixtures and that they did and played fantastic football with our four from regular under-11 squad to come away with great win. Thanks to the following under-9 players: Ryan Sergeant, Oisin Kelly, Dylan Callaghan, James McCarney, Luke Denieffe.

Finally, thanks to all parents who took late calls to move squads when asked. So yet again, three under-11 teams played on Fri evening with 15 of under-11 group of players not available to play for various reasons. Under-11s White away to Newtown on Friday. Also on Friday, under-11s Red squad away to St Kevins 2.

Under-10s – We played Eadestown away in the last NKL spring league game and lost by a couple of scores probably due to a very busy week of Wicklow games.

Go Games - On Saturday in Tinahely at 11am.

BALLYMANUS

Well done to all the Billies juveniles who took part in the Féile last weekend. There was no lotto jackpot last weekend from 1, 7, 11, and 16. Match threes were: Mickey and Mary, Mairead Byrne, Eilish Harmon, Lorcan Kavanagh, Liam White and Allison, Zoey, Becky.

The club would like to extend its deepest sympathies to the extended family and friends of the late Charlie Byrne Ballinacor and Mick Byrne Sleemane who sadly passed away recently. Ar Dheis Diabh go raibh a ainmeacha dilis.

SHILLELAGH

Theresa Jordan, Minmore, passed to her eternal reward on Wednesday of last week. To her daughters, Margaret and Theresa, sons, Robert, John and David, and to Theresa’s extended family and friends, deepest sympathy from all connected with Shillelagh G.A.A Club. R.I.P. Theresa.

Well done to Kevin O’Brien, his management team and our county Minor football team who lowered the colours of the all conquering Dubs with an impressive display in Parnell Park on Wednesday last.

The Royal County will provide the final obstacle to what we all hope will be a leinster semi-final appearance and maybe who knows maybe hope for the future.

Commiserations to our ladies county football team who had to give best to their laois counterparts in their Leinster final encounter on Sunday last.

The combination drawn in the club lotto draw on Monday, June 25, was 6, 12, 18, and 20. There was no jackpot winner.

The following matched three numbers and shared €100: Jonathan Behan, Quarry St., and James Driver, Kilcavan. David Nolan won the promoters prize again.

The next draw with the jackpot an enticing €2,900 will take place in Kenny’s Central House on Monday, July 9, tickets costing just €2 are available from our very willing promoters, players and committee members. Your continued support of our fundraising activities are much appreciated.

Well done to all connected with the resurrection of the Ardeen Cheshire Home Garden Fete which was held in ideal weather conditions on Sunday last July 1.

A bit of controversy as to when it was last staged but it was fantastic to see the Cheshire grounds crammed with folk of all ages and hopefully this will become an annual once again. Buala Bos to all concerned, organisers and the people of the locality and surrounding areas for their support.

Pride of place this week to our talented under--11 squad who headed into the west to take on Baltinglass in their latest league encounter on Wednesday, June 27.

Underdogs maybe, but this group tend to cope well with the underdog tag and once again turned on the style and emerged winners by a three-point margin after a thriller. Well done to panel, parents and coaches, Daragh Gregan and David Cullen.

The St. Mary’s under-13 squad made the long journey to Greystones on Monday last, July 2, to take on the home side in their Division of the league. This group have shown massive improvement this year to date and hopefully the match report in next week’s notes will contain positive news.
