30th La Touche Legacy and festival of history

The Launch of the 30th La Touche Legacy Seminar and 5th Festival of History took place last week in Greystones Golf Club.

‘It was with a little sadness the launch was taking place without our honorary President Garech de Brun who passed away earlier this year,’ said festival chairman George Jones.

Mr de Brun will be remembered at this year’s seminar, which takes place at Greystones Golf Club on Friday and Saturday, September 21 and 22. The theme for this year is ‘Evolution of the Irish State – Social and Political’.

Rosemary Raughter, chairperso­n of Greystones Archaeolog­ical and Historical Society, said: ‘We are very happy to see Rosemary Cullen Owens speaking to the subject of the women’s suffrage movement and the Irish votes for the women campaign.’

Retired lawyer and judge Liz Goldthorpe will speak on Averil Deverell, a Greystones resident and first women to practice at the Bar. Other lectures by Noel Campbell, Dr Martin O ’Donoghue, Felix Larkin will touch on the Irish Parliament­ary Party, the Spanish flu in Wicklow and the part played by Dublin opinion in the new Irish State with David McCullagh of Prime Time RTE speaking on Eamon de Valera.

St Kevin’s NS will provide the dramatic and musical opening and Minister Simon Harris will be the dinner guest speaker. The price is €30 for all lectures or €50 including dinner. Call 01 2875678 or 01 2876694.
