Byrne makes Irish team

FRESH from his U-16 Irish Amateur Championsh­ip victory, Baltinglas­s golfer Joseph Byrne has been selected on the Irish team to compete for the McGregor Trophy at Kedleston Park.

The Golfing Union of Ireland have selected a squad of seven boys for the McGregor Trophy (English U16) from July 17 to 19.

Joseph joins Keaton Morrison from Greenacres who is making his second appearance at the English U16 Stroke Play Championsh­ip and joining them this year are: Michael Fitzgibbon (Portmarnoc­k), Thomas Hig- gins (Roscommon), Joshua Hill (Galgorm Castle), Ewan McArthur (Massereene) and Joshua McCabe (Roganstown),

Morrison made the cut in 2017 and finished in a tie for 23rd place. Joshua Hill qualified for this year’s tournament based on his result at last year’s Reid Trophy (English U14 Open), where he shared sixth place.

Played over 72 holes, across three days, the top 40 and ties will progress to the final day after a 36-hole cut.

Previous winners of the McGregor Trophy include England’s Justin Rose and Italy’s Edoardo Molinari.

Ireland Under-16 Boys Captain Kevin Raftery (Forrest Little) will accompany the squad along with manager John McGrath (Royal Tara).

Joseph Byrne and Keaton Morrison have also been selected to participat­e at the European Young Masters (U16).

This year’s event takes place at Hauger GC in Norway from July 26 to 29.
