Nine puppies left to die in Wicklow town

July 2002

-

The Wicklow branch of the SPCA has reported a spate of puppy dumping.

In the space of a week, nine puppies were rescued after they were left to die.

Three puppies, aged between three and four weeks old, were abandoned in a ditch at the side of Marlton Road. A passing motorist brought the defenceless animals out to the Sharpeshill Sanctuary in Rathdrum.

Last week six two-week-old puppies were dumped at the loading bay at the back of Tesco in Wicklow town. They were discovered by the last customer in the supermarket that evening and taken in overnight before being brought to Sharpeshill.

According to the SPCA, the puppies would have died if they hadn’t been found as they were too young to be taken away from their mother.

Members of the animal welfare organisation are currently looking after the unwanted puppies and feeding them by hand.
