John reels in a record trout

July 1991

-

It was by no means ‘ the one that got away’ when Avoca man John Keogh reeled himself into the local angling history books recently by pulling in a monster trout.

For John, who is an experienced and keen fisherman, couldn’t believe his eyes when a trout weighing 8 lbs 2 ozs appeared on the end of his hook during a leisurely fishing break at the Meetings of the Waters.

The brown trout was twenty-six inches long and it is believed to be the biggest fish of its kind ever to be caught in these east Wicklow waters.

Rathdrum man, Matt Moore was on hand to help John pull in his catch and witness the historical event, which it is considered, will be hard to beat in the future.

The trout was immediately taken to a taxidermist and the stuffed version is on display at the Meetings pub.
