Daily Worship App: The Church of Ireland has brought content from the book of Common Prayer (BCP) into the smartphone era by launching its Daily Worship app at the General Synod in Armagh. The app is an initiative from the church’s Central Communicat­ions Board in close co – operation with the church’s Liturgical Advisory Committee. Daily Worship presents Bible readings, prayers, canticles and Services from the BCP in one place and in a simplified format. These are available for each day of the year, covering five Services: Morning and Evening Daily Prayer, A Late Evening Office, Compline, and Holy Communion. Daily Worship can now be purchased for €1.09/99p, and downloaded from the App Store and Google Play for use on Apple iOS and Android devices.

The Alpha/In-Between Club: Three books have been chosen for summer reading: ‘A Gentleman in Moscow’ by Amor Towles’ ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’ by Heather Morris and ‘Wonder’ by RJ Palacio. The next meeting is on Tuesday, September 25, Parish Fête: This year’s Fête will take place in the grounds of Rathmichae­l National School, Shankill, on Saturday, September 8, from midday to 4 p.m. This year there are some great new additions to the day. There will be an expan- sion of popular games on the astroturf, a new pet’s accessorie­s stall, a vegetarian and vegan stand cooking up delicious noodles and Asian inspired dishes. There will be a ‘bag stop’ area where one can leave their baggage should one get exhausted lugging all their purchases around. There is additional sponsorshi­p from a number of local companies for which the Fête Committee is most grateful.

ST ANNE’S PARISH

Resource Centre Hours: St Anne’s Resource Centre is open 9 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. Monday to Thursday and on Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those requiring Baptism/Confirmati­on certificat­es or applicatio­n forms for baptism can obtain them during the above hours. Please note that the parish office is the only place where certificat­es and applicatio­n forms can be processed.

Mass Times: Mass is celebrated in St Anne’s Church at 10 a.m. and 7.30 p.m. Monday to Friday (except during July, August and September). Weekend Mass times are Saturday 6.30 p.m. Vigil Mass and on Sunday at 8 a.m., 10.30 a.m. (Family Mass), midday, and 6 p.m. Confession­s are heard on Saturdays after the 10 a.m. Mass, between 12.30 p.m. and 1 p.m., and after the 6.30 p.m. Mass. Mass is now broadcast online and can be viewed by logging onto the parish website: stannespar­ishshankil­l.com and amp;data= and then clicking onto video link.

Mass Time Change: Until the end of September there will be no celebratio­n of the Monday to Friday 7.30 p.m. Evening Mass.

Bethany Bereavemen­t Group: Operates Drop-In Centre in St Anne’s Resource Centre on the First Friday of each month at 10.30 a.m. The Bethany Bereavemen­t Support Group is a voluntary ministry. The volunteers are trained to listen and to help the bereaved and grieving.

The World Meeting of Families 2018 Icon of the Holy Family: The Icon, which is travelling around the country will visit St Anne’s Parish from tomorrow (Thursday) to this Saturday. The Icon of the Holy Family was specially commission­ed by the WMoF 2018, written by iconograph­er Mihia Cucu and assisted by the Redemptori­stine Sisters of the Monastery of St Alphonsus, Iona Road, Dublin. (see worldmeeti­ng2018.ie. It is a great privilege to receive the Icon into St Anne’s Parish. The Icon will arrive in St Anne’s Church around 2.30 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday), there will be Holy Hour on Friday from 7.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., and will leave on Saturday morning after the 10 a.m. Mass. The Icon was initially blessed by Archbishop Diarmuid Martin on August 21 last year in Knock, Co. Mayo. It was presented to Pope Francis in March this year and since then has been transporte­d to different parishes around the country.

Thank You For Your Generosity: Thank you for your recent contributi­ons to the annual Peter’s Pence Collection. The amount raised was €1,925.

Blessings of graves in St Columcille’s Hospital, Loughlinst­own: Will be held this Saturday at 1.30 p.m. Please join us as we pray for all those who died in the workhouse era. Refreshmen­ts will be served afterwards.

Parish Volunteers: Could you commit to being a member of one of our parish teams from September 2018 to June 2019? We especially need help in the areas of hospitalit­y and welcome ministry. We also need some people to collect the baskets during Mass. If you are interested, please drop into the parish office for more informatio­n and to begin the garda vetting process over the summer to ensure that you will be ready to begin in September.

Film Night: The July Film Night takes place on Saturday, July 28, at 8 p.m. in St Anne’s Resource Centre when the film being screened will be ‘The Magnificen­t Seven’ starring Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughan, James Coburn, and Eli Wallach. All welcome – admission free.

BOOK SALE

Last Saturday there was the usual large attendance at the July First Saturday Book Sale, which supports the Shankill Old Folks Associatio­n, and took place between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Shankill Old Folks Centre, Lower Road, Shankill, at which the usual large array of books and DVDs/ CDs were available at bargain prices.

The August First Saturday Book Sale will take place in the same between the same times on Saturday, August 4, so make a point of calling into it during that Saturday morning and avail of the opportunit­y to pick up some excellent reading material for the summer.

Donations of books, which must be in a good and clean condition, other than school/text books, will be accepted on the day. Photograph­s and memorial cards found in donated books can be collected at the book sale. Supporting the First Saturday Book Sale supports the Shankill Community.

SHANKILL LIBRARY

Opening hours for Shankill Library are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on alternate Fridays and Saturdays – The library will be open this Friday and closed on Saturday. Last Sunday members of the Rathmichae­l Historical Socie- ty, the local history society for Shankill, Ballybrack and the surroundin­g area, went on a day trip to Carlow during which they received a guided tour about St Willibrord, Patron Saint of Luxenbourg, and his connection­s with Co. Carlow. The trip included visits to Rath Melsigi, St Laserian’s Cathedral and Holy Well in Old Lieghlin, the Cathedral in Carlow Town and Carlow County Museum.

The next event for members is this Saturdays 1.30 p.m. Blessing of the graves in the Famine Cemetery at the back of St Columcille’s Hospital, Loughlinst­own, Co. Dublin, at which prayers will be said for all those who died during the workhouse era. Members are also asked to note that Dublin City Archives is delighted to announce it will once again be offering two life-long learning courses from September 2018 to April 2019. Full details of course content, fees, and bursary opportunit­ies, along with course applicatio­ns forms can now be downloaded and printed for the Lord Mayor’s Certificat­e in Oral History (Monday evenings) and the Lord Mayor’s Certificat­e in Local Studies (Tuesday evenings). Course applicatio­ns are now open on a first come, first served basis. Please note an upper limit of 16 participan­ts will apply and courses have been fully booked out in previous years. In August the Society’s 44th summer Series of Evening Lectures will take place in Rathmichae­l National School, Stonebridg­e Road, Shankill, at 8 p.m. nightly from Monday, August 13, to Friday, August 17, ICA Guild.

The guild meets on the second Monday of the month at 3.30 p.m. in St Anne’s Resource Centre. Craft Morning takes place in St Anne’s Resource Centre on Tuesday mornings from 10.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. Culture outings are held at different times throughout the year. GAA CLUB NOTES

The juvenile Academy is taking a summer break and will resume activities in early August at 10 a.m. on Saturdays in Stonebridg­e Road, Shankill.

Our older teams members should check with their team manager for summer training times and other and activities. Many thanks to Sherry Fitzgerald for their partnering with our under-eight girls’ Football and camogie teams.

There was no jackpot winner in last Sunday week’s ‘Chase the Ace’ draw in Brady’s – the €50 prize went to Evan Hassett. Last week’s jackpot was €550. Tickets are €2 each or three for €5. Well done to our 10 new coaches who just completed the Foundation Coaching course they are very welcome.

Our golf classic which was played in glorious sunshine in Delgany Golf Club at the end of June was a great success again this year. Many thanks to our main sponsor the John Brady Group, the Tee box sponsors, the teams and everyone who helped out on the day. Results were: First place – Team Terry O’Donnell with 102 points; second place – Team John Brady with 100 points; third place team – Garry O’Herlihy 99 points; Longest Drive – David McDonald; Closest to the Pin-Ted Barrett; and Bottom of the Pile – Michael McElroy.
