Blessing of the graves

The annual Blessing of the Graves in Kilmacanogue will take place on Sunday, August 19, at 3 p.m. As always, it will begin in the Old Graveyard and then up to the new cemetery.

Please make every effort to tidy up a grave that might not have someone to look after it in close proximity of your own loved ones.

Horse show

Kilmacanogue Horse Show week is here and this is a great opportunity for families to enjoy a fun day out.

This will be a very active day and allows people to get ‘up close and personal’ animals as well as offering pony rides for children, the opportunity to enter your dog in the friendliest dog show in Ireland, face-painting, photography etc. not forgetting the fabulous Irish Horse breeds all on show.

There is also the obedient pony competition, the children’s fancy dress and the ‘style and appearance’ competitions.

Lots of volunteers from local charities act as safety stewards as safety always comes first at Kilmacanogue Horse Show but it’s a lot of work stewarding a 40-acre site and making sure horse and ponies are kept to separate walkways away from people, prams, dogs and wheelchairs.

This year volunteers from several charities join the Irish Kidney Association, who have acted as safety stewards at Kilmacanogue Horse Show over previous years.

Volunteers from Bray Purple House Cancer Support, Spinal Injuries Ireland, Newcourt School and Bray Lakers will be donning Hi Viz Vests as official horse show safety stewards and working hard to keep everyone safe as well as happy on Saturday, July 28.

There is also a last-minute reminder for all riders, parents and instructors to enter only for the Kilmacanogue Horse Show to avoid disappointment.

The pony classes are filling up fast and you can still enter online to secure your place in your favourite competition.

Although people can enter competitions on the day it is advisable for pony and horse competitions to enter online.

This saves valuable time on the day as last-minute grooming always counts and takes longer than planned.

Classes such as the very popular ‘Obedient Pony’, ‘Style and Appearance’ are split by age to accommodate large numbers of young competitors. Be sure of your place and enter at kilmacanoguehorseshow.com.

New arrival

Congratulations to Paul Cahill and Eileen Strahan on the birth of their second child, a baby girl which they have called Julia.

Of course, we cannot leave Julia’s big brother Fionn, who is delighted with his baby sister and is a great help to his mammy and daddy.

Thankfully everyone is doing great but Paul now has a problem trying to find a place for Julia in his tractor ibut that’s an issue for another day!

Congratulations to you all on this wonderful news.

Robin does it again

Local man Robin Seymour is just back from the Masters’ Mountainbike World Championships in Andorra where he won his third gold medal in succession in the aged 45 to 49 years category.

Also successful was Peter Buggle from Glencree, Enniskerry, who won a silver medal in his category.

A number of members of the Wicklow Off Road Club (Team W.O.R.C.) travelled to Andorra to compete and support the riders. Well done Robin and Peter, fantastic achievement.

Bobby Messett golf classic

On Friday, August 24, the Bobby Messett Memorial golf classic will take place.

This will be a relaxed four-member scramble and is at a cost of €240 per team which includes green fees, prizes and a meal after in Plucks with music on the night.

All tee times are now fully booked up but if you cannot make it, a tee box sponsor would be greatly appreciated. This costs €100 and please contact Liam Finnerty to arrange same at 086 6074821.

Charlesland Golf Club have been most generous with green fees, Plucks have once again been excellent in their support and of course, everyone has been most generous to date.

Cúl Camp

This year’s GAA Cúl Camp in Kilmacanogue GAA Club will take place from Monday, August 13, to Friday, August 17.

Unfortunately, this year there will be no registration taken on the day, all children must be booked in online before midday on Friday, August 10.

Please book early to avoid disappointment.

This is a great fun activities for chldren and is a great opportunity to make new friends.

Intermediate Championship

Kilmacanogue faced a difficult Intermediate Championship opener last Friday night when they played Tinahely, who are strong favourites and the final score was 4-11 to 3-06 in Tinahely’s favour.

Kilmac made the worst possible start and trailed 1-06 to no score before Mick Whelan slotted over a point and then trailed 2-08 to two points before a Rob Conan goal breathed life into the team again leaving it 3-08 to 1-04 at the break.

Manager Mark King issued some stern words during the break and Kilmac were a new team at the restart with Mick Whelan and Josh O’Callaghan hitting the net but the damage was done at the start and Tinahely ran out 8 point winners.

Next up is a must win game against Coolkenno on Friday week.
