Over 80 kids fly the flag for Wicklow

OVER 80 children from nine out of eleven Areas represente­d Wicklow at the Aldi Community Games National Finals in University of Limerick over the weekend.

In sweltering heat on Saturday heats and semi-finals were the order of the day.

In the Relays Lakeside’s U-10 mixed, U-12 Boys/Girls, U-16 Boys; Shillelagh’s U-14 Boys and Aughrim/Annacurra’s U-16 4x 200 made the finals and were close to making the podium on Sunday.

In the individual events the following reached the finals on Sunday:

U-12 Boys 600m - Noah Harris, Ashford/Glenealy; U-12 Girls 600m - Abbie Doherty, Baltinglas­s; U-16 Boys 1500m - Paraic Doyle, Aughrim/Annacurra; U-16 Girls 1500m - Ella Fleming, Baltinglas­s. With stiff competitio­n it was a great achievemen­t to reach the final.

The BBK/R Boys Pitch and Putt performed well on the day - the Boys and Girls teams having medalled in this event over the last few years.

Medals were not easy won over the weekend, our only gold medal was won in U-8 Boys 80m by Ciaran Kenny from Shillelagh.

In the Girls U-8 80m, silver was won by Shelia Murphy, Shillelagh, while Boys U8 60m: Fionn Stephens from Roundwood won bronze.

These children are on the start of their journey in Community Games while Alan Miley from Westside ran his last race in the games capturing a bronze medal in U-16 200m.

In the Girls U-10 200m there was a 4th place finish for Seren Waters from Westside; in U12 Boys 100m fourth for Damien Corrigan, Shillelagh, in the U-14 Girls Shot Putt silver for Hollie Wright from Westside, while in the U-12 Girls 2k Cycling on Grass Katherine Lawlor from Roundwood finished fourth.
