Aughrim win big at super ‘Bowles blitz’
Aughrim ‘B’ beat Tullow ‘A’ to win the title
AUGHRIM Bowling Club hosted an Indoor Bowling Tournament in the spacious Aughrim Community Sports Complex on Monday and Tuesday, August 13 and 14.
Sixteen teams in total from Carlow (5), Wexford (2) with the remainder from the Garden County vied to win this inaugural ‘Granite Village Bowles Blitz’ event.
Four mats were spread out in the indoor Sports Hall and the teams were split into four groups of four. Three games were played out on each mat over nine ends. The top two on each mat went into the Cup competition played on Tuesday while teams three and four played the Shield competition. Following some very exciting and enjoyable games of bowls, the host club Aughrim ‘B’ overcame Tullow ‘A’ to claim the Cup competition.
Tullow had some measure of consolation when Tullow ‘B’ won the Shield competition when they proved too strong for a gallant Gorey ‘B’ squad.
All teams enjoyed a BBQ lunch on both days prepared by Chef Kevin O’Connor and his inside team of Patricia Porter and her squad of helpers who were called to the pumps when the pressure was greatest.
Teams playing were as follows: Bennekerry, Carlow had two teams, Tullow had three, Gorey two, Aughrim two, Redcross two, Avoca two, Annacurra one, Newtown one and Glenealy one.
At the presentation ceremony on Tuesday Kevin O’Connor thanked all teams for the contribution they had made to such an enjoyable event. He expressed the gratitude of the organisers for the use of the excellent facilities and thanked the members of the host club, Aughrim, for their work in catering for one hundred and fifty people over the two days.
The winning Aughrim team members were Anne Tallon, Nancy Linehan, Donal Keenan and skip Joe Randal. Finally the Aughrim Bowling Club wish to thank neighbouring clubs Annacurra and Avoca for the use of their mats.
