Fire fighters tackle flood at Sweeneys

- BY MARY FOGARTY

THERE was flooding at Sweeneys chipper on Trafalgar Road in Greystones last Sunday morning.

A spokeswoman for the business said that Greystones Fire Service managed to pump out the drains following the flood, preventing it from getting higher.

She explained that there is a river running down under the bridge.

‘When that gets full it overflows into the sewerage system. It backs up the sewer at the harbour and can go nowhere. It backs up into the shop.’

She said that the shop was closed until the afternoon for cleaning and sterilising.

Staff arrived that morning to find a flooded premises, for what they say is the eighth time in four years. ‘We can’t open until it’s dealt with.

‘We rang Irish Water and got a reference number. They sent someone from a drain company on Monday evening. It’s not a drain problem.’

She said that the Greystones fire service personnel know exactly what causes the problem and they are able to fix it. ‘If it wasn’t for them the flood would have gotten worse and worse.’

She said that they pump the water to a different sewer away from the shop. ‘ The fire service were called at around 8.45 a.m.,’ she said.

They discovered the flood at around 8.30 a.m. and were debating how to tackle the problem. Gardaí from Roundwood and Blessington were involved in a high-speed car chase for over 30km last Friday.

A garda helicopter was also deployed during the pursuit.

A black Saab was spotted driving in an erratic fashion at 11.55 a. m. on Friday by Blessington gardaí but did not respond when gardaí tried to stop it.

The Saab drove on with the gardaí in pursuit and back-up was sought from the Garda Air Support Unit. The driver appeared to continue to drive erratically, speeding up along sections of the road and then slowing down.

As the Saab made its way toward Roundwood, motorists were advised to avoid the village and local gardaí closed off the road by getting a beer delivery truck to block it.

Two men were later arrested and brought to Wicklow Garda Station.

Witold Pala of no fixed abode appeared before a special court sitting in Bray where he was charged with dangerous driving, failure to provide a specimen for drink driving and criminal damage.
