Valleymount
VALLEYMOUNT NEWCASTLE 1-15 0-5
VALLEYMOUNT maintained their push for the Junior A championship with a facile victory over a game but limited Newcastle side at Ballinakill last Saturday evening
The lakesiders never really had to get out of third gear to win convincingly, however Newcastle deserve great credit for putting in a hardworking effort against a far superior side.
Valleymount started like an express train with Liam Miley, Declan Cahill and Gary Walsh all scoring inside the opening four minutes. It looked like they were out to do to Newcastle what they did to Knockananna in their previous match and finish the contest by half-time.
It got worse for the east coast side when a mishit shot at a point by William Kavanagh looped into Ian Lucey’s net.
It took 18 minutes for Newcastle to score but a fine team point it was. Oisin Doyle and Philip O’Connor combined to get their best player, Robbie O’Gara, on the end of the move and the wing forward split the posts.
Valleymount went back about their work and quickly quelled any uprising with Liam Miley pointing two scores the second a beautifully clipped point on the run and goalkeeper Paul Miley been summoned from his nets to land a 50.
Newcastle, to their credit, kept battling and Robbie O’Gara pointed his second from out on the right wing and slotted a short range free to close out the first-half scoring.
Valleymount’s manager was not pleased with the first half performance and let his troops know at the interval.
The second half meandered on similarly to the first with Newcastle trying their heart out but Valleymount’s extra touch of class seeing them pull away.
Firstly, James Fitzpatrick stroked a lovely score after Brian Miley had done the donkeywork. Then galloping midfielder Liam Miley found a gap and shot accurately on the run.
O’Gara and centre forward Philip O’Conner replied for Newcastle but that was as close as the seasiders got with Valleymount slowly pulling away with the last six scores.
