Call to pledge to a full day of no road deaths

-

Gardai in Bray are encouraging motorists to pledge their support for the third Project Edward, taking place today ( Wednesday).

September 19 aims to be a European Day Without a Road Death.

On average 70 people are killed each day on Europe’s roads. Ireland aims for zero road deaths on Project Edward day, and every day beyond. ‘Every road death prevented has an estimated value of more than €1.94 million,’ said the gardai in a statement.

The target is that no one should die on the roads of Europe on Wednesday, September 19.

An Garda Síochána are asking the public pause to reflect on how we use the roads.

‘We believe that Project Edward can make a significant contribution towards further sizeable and sustained reductions in road death and serious injury,’ they said.

Road users are asked to reflect on their attitude and behaviour by pledging to:

Remind family, friends and colleagues to take extra care on the roads; put lights on for safety; drive as safely as possible and follow the rules of the road; be extra vigilant and attentive to the needs of pedestrians, cyclists, children, older people and horse riders; drive at speeds that are both legal and safe;

Carry out proper safety checks on tyres; pay particular attention when driving near schools and where there are lots of children; never drive after alcohol, drugs, or medication that could impair safety; look as far ahead as possible and not tailgate; wear seat belts and ensure others do also; not use a mobile phone; not get distracted by anything inside or outside the car, or inside my head; set a good example to passengers by driving calmly and safely.
