Cyclists complete challenge and help raise almost €35,000 for Make-A-Wish

-

THREE Co Wicklow employees of energy provider SSE saddled up for a recent challenge that has raised almost €35,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Emmet Wardell from Tinahely, Peter Campbell from Bray and David Noronha from Greystones took part in a 400km three-day cycle from Dublin to Galway.

The SSE Ireland Charity Cycle left the company’s headquarters in Leopardstown on Friday morning, September 7, and weaved its way through Kildare, Laois, Offaly and Tipperary before finishing at Galway Wind Park, which was jointly developed by SSE and Coillte, on the Connemara coast on Sunday, September 9.

The cyclists covered a combined 12,000km over the three-day cross-country route – equivalent to more than three Tour de France races. While none of the SSE riders were pushing for a yellow jersey, they certainly hit the jackpot with almost €35,000 raised for Make-A-Wish Ireland, which grants the wishes of children and young people with life-threatening medical conditions.

Speaking from the finish line, event organiser Emmet Wardell said it was ‘a real thrill’ to be part of the cycle.

‘A lot of hard work and training went into making the event a success and we’re delighted to have surpassed our fundraising target of €30,000 for an amazing charity. I’d like to thank everyone for their generous support,’ he said.

Greystones cyclist David Noronha said it was ‘a tough challenge, but a great opportunity’ to help a great charity.

‘We’re all really proud of our achievement, and know the money raised will make a real difference for children and families across the country,’ he said.
