Four hazardous household waste collections

Four collections of hazardous household waste will take place in the county in the coming months.

The first of these will take place at the Murrough Recycling Centre in Wicklow town on Saturday, September 29. Further collections will take place at Bray Recycling Centre on the Boghall Road on Saturday, October 27, at Arklow Recycling Centre on Emoclew Road on Saturday, November 10, and at Blessington council yard on the Naas Road on Saturday, November 24. Each collection will take place from 9.30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Many items people throw in their bins are actually hazardous materials. These should not be mixed in with regular domestic waste and instead stored safely until the next hazardous waste collection. Hazardous household waste includes: paints and solvents; batteries; fluorescent tubes; fertilisers; pesticides and poisons; waste medicines; adhesives, inks and resins; caustic soda and waste oils; drain cleaners; cleaning agents and detergents; photographic chemicals; oven cleaners; and shoe polishes.

The collection will be carried out by a private contractor on behalf of Wicklow County Council. As materials must be kept separately in sealed containers in the truck, there is a limit to the space available for each type on the day.

Materials should not be left at the locations outside of the collection times and fines for littering will be issued if this occurs.

Household batteries can be left into any Wicklow County Council Centre at any time and are part of a free take back scheme at all shops selling batteries. Waste paints are taken at the recycling centres in Bray and Arklow throughout the year.
