Gaol part of new sales trip
WICKLOW GAOL will be among the 11 tourism attractions taking part in a week-long sales mission to Australia and New Zealand.
The trip takes place at the end of October and was organised by Tourism Ireland to help grow tourism from both markets. A briefing was held this week in Dublin for the companies taking part in the sales mission. Hundreds of influential travel agents, tour operators, airlines and travel journalists will be targeted through a series of workshops and networking events in the key cities of Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland.
Many of the inmates serving sentences in Wicklow Gaol ended up being transported to various areas of the then British Empire, including Australia and New Zealand. Around 228,000 tourists from both countries visited Ireland last year.
The objective of the sales mission is to engage with travel professionals in the four cities who are currently selling Ireland, or who have strong potential to sell the destination – and to encourage them to extend their Ireland offerings.
