LADIES DAY IN AUGHRIM
Three intriguing battles down for decision
THE biggest day in the ladies football club calendar in Wicklow is almost upon us with a superb triple header of clashes up for decision this Saturday in Joule Park Aughrim.
The main event of the afternoon will come at 4pm when the all-conquering Tinahely take on Tobert Hollingsworth’s St Patrick’s in a repeat of last year’s decider which was firmly in the balance until late in the day.
Tinahely have rampaged their way to the county final and have eyes on bigger prizes perhaps but they will know in no uncertain terms that St Patrick’s have the footballers and the belief to take them on all over the field.
St Patrick’s came through a battle with Baltinglass under lights in their semi-final while Tinahely showed no mercy to Bray Emmets in their last-four clash.
Expect hunger, desire and plenty of tenacity as Robert Hollingsworth sends his troops out on a mission to halt this Tinahely dominance and return new rulers to the throne.
The day gets underway at Joule Park Aughrim when the Intermediate clash of Valleymount and St Patrick’s and this promises to be a hugely entertaining clash from noon.
Valleymount came through a cracking game with neighbours St Nicholas by 4-5 to 3-6 and with their men’s team flying high expect a large crowd to make the journey to Aughrim for this final.
St Patrick’s defeated Tinahely in their semi-final and will have plenty to say about the dsestination of the Intermediate football title.
The middle game of the day has the potential for plenty of goals if one of the semi-finals was anything to go by. Éire Óg bagged 10-5 in that game against Baltinglass in Laragh with Maedhbh Deeney notching 5-4 of that total.
An Tochar defeated AGB in the other semi-final by 2-9 to 2-7 after a tough battle so a cracking game is on the cards in the Junioor decider at 2pm.
Intermediate final at 12pm: Valleymount v St. Patrick’s. Junior final at 2pm: An Tochar v Éire Óg.
Senior final at 4pm: St. Patrick’s v Tinahely.
On Sunday in Joule Park Aughrim there is a busy day for the men with two Senior hurling championship quarter-finals up for decision and the last remaining SFC quarter-final between Hollywood and Baltinglass also scheduled for completion.
The men of Carnew Emmets will be seeking revenge when they take to the field at 1pm. St Patrick’s will do battle with Éire Óg Greystones in the second game with Michael Neary hoping to make a return to another county semi-final while Mick Murray’s Hollywood will look to bounce back from defeat to Rathnew with victory over Baltinglass.
