Kathleen has wheely good time

LUCKY KATHLEEN AND PAT WIN BIG ON WINNING STREAK TV SHOW

- By DEBORAH COLEMAN

TWO Wicklow contestants secured a combined win of €94,000 on the Winning Streak television game show on Saturday, one of whom appeared on the programme for the second time.

Rathdrum grandmother Kathleen Poole spun the wheel and brought her total win to €57,000 while Pat Monaghan from Arklow walked away with a €37,000 prize.

Kathleen is no stranger to the show having appeared on it back in 1999 when presenter Mike Murphy was at the helm.

On that occasion, she won £23,400 which was a pretty penny almost 20 years ago.

That’s not the only bit of luck her family has had on National Lottery and RTÉ game shows as her sister, Maud Doyle, who was cheering her on in the audience on Saturday, was on the Big Money Game back in 2011 where she won €20,000.

Kathleen has been married to husband John, a farmer, for the past 47 years and the couple have six children and nine grandchildren so she wasn’t short of support in the studio on Saturday.

Fellow Wicklow man Pat was thrilled with his win and spoke about getting the surprise of his life when he saw Marty and Sinead call his name last week.

He was watching the show with his wife, of 43 years, Esma who he claims is a massive Winning Streak fan who never misses an episode.

Pat and Esma have four adult children Patrice, Róisin, Peter and Patrick Junior and six young grandchildren.

Pat is a huge sports fan and, even though GAA is his passion, he would watch any sport.

He played as a fullback for his local side Arklow Rocks for many years and played on well into his forties.

He can still be found supporting the local team frequently and the Sunday Game is a staple in his house.

Nowadays he still likes to keep fit by cycling and hillwalking.

Kathleen and Pat’s winnings were part of €190,000 won by contestants on last week’s Winning Streak.

The enhanced National Lottery game show, co-presented by Marty Whelan and Sinead Kennedy, features some perennial favorite games as well brand new games including Play or Pay, Roll for Riches, WinFall and Electric Dream – where one player will win an electric car worth €25,000.

The popular show, which is the second longest running game show in Europe, first appeared on our screens in September 1990 and since then a massive 5,975 people have taken part, winning in excess of €170 million in prizes.

Kathleen is only one of a handful to have been picked to appear twice.

A brand new-look Winning Streak scratch card is available in the 5,900 National Lottery retailers all over the country, where as well as the chance to appear on the Winning Streak TV game show if you get three stars, players will also be in with a chance to win some great cash prizes up to €5,000.

The odds for those who purchase a Winning Streak to win is 1 in 1.76 to win a cash or three star prize.
