Coolboy GAA at crossroads
Meeting to discuss future
THE future of Coolboy GAA Club will be the topic for discussion when club members meet on Saturday, October 13, in Coolafancy Hall at 6pm, with the possible folding of the club a very real and present danger.
A meeting was held last week for members but at a committee meeting this week it was decided to make that outcome of that meeting null and void after some members expressed their concern regarding the opportunity for all members to vote on the matter.
Club Chairman Damien O’Keeffe said that there are two options for the proud Coolboy GAA club going forward: folding or joining forces with Shillelagh GAA Club.
‘We are not staying as a single club,’ explained Damien. ‘We just don’t have the numbers. There are six or seven players retiring from the current team this year and that leaves 11 or 12 players including younger players. We are either folding as a club or else we are joining with Shillelagh as Coolboy/ Shillelagh or Shillelagh/Coolboy, that has yet to be decided,’ he added.
Should the club decide to fold it is likely that the current players would disperse among neighbouring clubs such as Carnew and Shillelagh with some of the club’s dual players already playing hurling for Carnew.
These are tough times for rural and small clubs with Kilbribe and Lacken having to amalgamate earlier this year and Fergal Ógs ceasing to have an adult team in recent times as well.
