- CROSS COUNTRY

THE even ages and novices cross country championships took place in Ronndwood last weekend in perfect conditions for racing.

A very impressive number of runners turned out across all the age groups with some excellent races throughout the day.

The women’s race was a close one up until the final lap where Ashford’s Laura Griffin stormed home in front of Kilcoole’s Claire Lauder with Catherine Nolan coming in fourth.

In the men’s race, Roundwood’s Alex Gray came home in first place some 11 seconds ahead of Inbhear Dee’s Paul Duffy with Troy Scully in third.

Bill Porter said that he was delighted with the turnout and he offered sincere thanks to Roundwood AC and Terry Kavanagh and all the stewards on duty on the day for their help.

‘It was a great day,’ said Bill. ‘And we’ll see everyone again for the uneven ages and intermediate cross country races this Sunday in Avondale,’ he added.

The racing ggets underway at 11am this sunday on the upper course but Bill Porter is advising runners to get there by 10am.

Bill also wished to express huge congratulations to Fionnuala and Alan McCormack on the birth of their baby daughter Isia.

‘Another star is born in Wicklow,’ said Bill.
