Two hazardous waste collections to take place

HAZARDOUS waste collections for household materials will take place in both Arklow and Wicklow town during the month of November.

The collection takes place at Arklow Recycling Centre at Emoclew Road on Saturday, November 10, from 9.30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The collection at the Murrough Recycling Centre in Wicklow town takes place on Saturday, November 24, from 9.30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Much of what people throw in bins is actually hazardous waste. These should not be mixed with normal domestic waste but should be safely stored until a hazardous waste collection takes place.

Among these items, which are welcome at the above collections, are: paints and solvents, batteries, fluorescent tubes, fertilisers, pesticides and poisons, waste medicines, adhesives, inks and resins, caustic soda and waste oils, drain cleaners, cleaning agents and detergents, photographic chemicals, oven cleaners, shoe polishes.

The collection is being carried out by a private contractor on behalf of Wicklow County Council.

As materials must be kept separately, stored and sealed in protective containers in the truck and because they are hazardous, there is a limit to the space available to store for each type of item during the collection and, therefore, a limit to the amount that can be taken in.

Materials may not be left at the locations outside of collection times, otherwise fines for littering will be issued.

Household batteries can be left at any Wicklow County Council recycling centre at any time and are part of a free ‘ take back scheme’ at all shops selling batteries. Paints are taken at Bray and Arklow Recycling Centres at all times.
