BRAY CRAFTERS REVEAL ‘WHAT LIES BENEATH’
NEW EXHIBITION AT SIGNAL ARTS CENTRE FEATURES WORK BY WOMEN FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE, WRITES MARY FOGARTY
Bray Crafters present their exhibition ‘What Lies Beneath’ at Signal Arts Centre from Monday, November 12, until Sunday, November 25.
Bray Crafters is a local, largely amateur, arts and crafts group that was established in 2013. Beginning as a small group of crafters who hailed mostly from Bray, it has grown to a collective with over 50 members from Bray and surrounding villages.
They gather together once a month for meetings where peer to peer skill sharing takes place, along with creating and catching up on all things craft.
This past calendar year, Bray Crafters has participated in group training with Kildare and Wicklow Education and Training Board. Members in the group have had solo and other group exhibits.
In conjunction with their first exhibition, the group were featured on RTE’s eclectic news program Nationwide. This group of women, from all walks of life, have made an impact on each other, their work and cultivated friendships through craft. ‘What Lies Beneath’ is Bray Crafters’ second group exhibition at the Signal Arts Centre. The title of this exhibition is one that challenges and encourages the group members to delve into political, humanitarian, gender and personal issues. It is an opportunity to strip back layers and masks and explore our own humanity. The support while creating these pieces echoes the support they are to each other. This exhibition is composed of new works by group members made from mediums including weaving, felting, embroidery, paper, painting, sculpture and mixed media pieces illustrating how the skills the women continually share and learn, influence and gently guide their finished work.
An opening reception will take place on Sunday, Novembeer 18, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
