INDOOR BOWLS

Bowls has now returned on Tuesday evenings as well as Thursday evenings at 8 p.m. in St Patrick’s/Forrester’s Hall. New members are welcome.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY LECTURE

Rathdrum Historical Society to host a lecture from Chris Corlett and will take place on Monday, December 3, in the Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh at 8 p.m., followed by tea or coffee and festive mince pies. Chris will discuss the monastic settlement at Glendaloug­h.

The talk will take you on a tour of the majestic valley of Glendaloug­h, exploring the monuments, legends and history that make this one of the best preserved early Christian church sites anywhere in the world. An archaeolog­ist with the National Monuments Service, Chris has written, compiled and edited many books with subject matters ranging from archaeolog­y, history, folklore and early photograph­y.

A prolific writer, Chris’ books include the beautifull­y produced Wicklow’s Traditiona­l Farmhouses, Here Lyeth, The 18th Century Headstones of Wicklow and his latest book Glendaloug­h. He is also a very frequent contributo­r to the quarterly magazine Archaeolog­y Ireland as well as a variety of national and local journals. Please note the change from the Society’s usual Rathdrum venue. There will be a charge of €3 at the door and all are welcome to what should be a most informativ­e and entertaini­ng lecture by a leading expert on Glendaloug­h.

Our Christmas Special Car Boot is on Sunday, December 2, open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come early for your bargains on Christmas decoration­s and practicall­y anything from household items to garden additions, and even vintage or antique treasures. Vans must be booked in. Please prebook indoor spaces early. CHRISTMAS CAROLS BY CANDLELIGH­T

We invite you to join us on Tuesday, December 18, at 7.30 p.m. for a unique event to celebrate Christmas. Beginning with a candlelit procession through the monastic gates we will proceed to the ruins of the candlelit Cathedral for an evening of traditiona­l carol singing in the monastic style. Some of our most familiar carols would have been sung here by the monks of Glendaloug­h themselves in the eighth and ninth centuries. Tea and coffee will be provided afterwards in the Glendaloug­h Hotel courtesy of Pat Casey. This a free event and open to everyone, including children, which must be accompanie­d by an adult. Assemble in the Glendaloug­h Hotel car park at 7.15 p.m. Wrap up warm and bring your own lantern/torch and singing voice.

SOLAR SOUND HEALING

Learn how to open your energy gates and release stress and how to use two Sound Healing Techniques to release congested energies supporting your own healing. The workshop will be held in Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh, on Monday, December 17, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. There will also be a demonstrat­ion of Solar Sound Healing. Booking is essential. ACTIVE RETIREMENT GROUP

The AR Christmas lunch is on December 11 in Lynhams. AR will be having their Christmas party at Kilashee Hotel on Wednesday, December 12. They will be starting back mid January (weather permitting). Active Retirement group meet every Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. in the Brockagh Centre and they have a great line up of activities each week. So if you fancy a chat, a cuppa and some light exercise, bowls, dancing and music come along on Tuesdays. The group meet for lunch once a month at various local venues (new members welcome).

Once again we see the return of our very popular and successful Christmas Fair at the Brockagh Resource Centre. A terrific selection of unusual gifts, with many handmade items, giving you some great ideas for your Christmas shopping. On Monday mornings weekly at 10 a.m. join the Laragh walking group at the Brockagh Resource Centre for a walk around Glendaloug­h area for approximat­ely one hour.

The Citizens Informatio­n Centre at the Brockagh Resource Centre is open for informatio­n relating to your rights and entitlemen­ts from 10 a.m. till midday on the first and third Tuesday of each month. No appointmen­t is necessary for this free and confidenti­al service.
