TIDY TOWNS GARDEN COMPETITIO­N

The presentati­on to the winners of our Garden Competitio­n took place in Lynhams on Friday, November 16. The winners were Marie McCoy, Fr Oliver Crotty, and Ray and Orla Carter. The event was sponsored by Denis Carter of Avon Motors to whom we are very grateful. Each winner was presented with a uniquely, beautiful clock turned from yew. Many thanks to Lynhams Hotel, Laragh for providing the refreshmen­ts.

GLENDALOUG­H CHRISTMAS FAIR

This year’s market will be on December 9, from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. Carol singing in aid of the homeless will be from 11 a.m. to midday There are over 50 Stalls, making it the perfect place to do a spot of Christmas shopping. Stallholde­rs will be selling unique homeware to personalis­ed presents, Christmas decoration­s, handcrafte­d jewellery, pure honey, bees wax candles, knits, crochet, wood turning, photograph­y, ceramics, silver jewellery, reindeer food, candle holders, homemade baking, clothes, Christmas wreaths, flowers, handmade natural body care products, you’re guaranteed to find something special for your loved ones.

With so many local makers and designers showcasing their gifts, you can tick off everything on your Christmas list all in one place and feel reassured that you’re supporting your local community. Throughout the Market, you’ll find tasty food to satisfy any appetite; grab a delicious hot dog, aromatic hot fruity drink to keep you toasty while you browse. CHRISTMAS LIGHTS EVENT

The Christmas lights in Laragh were switched on December 3 with the help of Santa and his reindeers. Well done to everyone involved and any donations from local businesses in making Laragh light up with snow effects on a magical Christmas evening. Coffee morning thanks.

A hugely successful coffee morning, hosted by Colette Dunlea, was held on October 25 in the Brockagh Centre. It raised a total of €2,591 for Breast Cancer Ireland. Colette would like to thank all the people who contribute­d their time and effort in support of the cause: the many fabulous bakers, those who generously donated gifts for the raffle, the staff at the Brockagh Centre and everyone who turned up to enjoy the occasion. Your support is sincerely appreciate­d.

CAROLS BY CANDLELIGH­T

A great way to start Christmas, in one of the most evocative settings in Wicklow.

We invite you to join us on Tuesday, December 18, at 7.30 p.m. for a unique event to celebrate Christmas. Begin- ning with a candlelit procession through the monastic gates we will proceed to the ruins of the candlelit Cathedral for an evening of traditiona­l carol singing in the monastic style. Some of our most familiar carols would have been sung here by the monks of Glendaloug­h themselves in the eighth and ninth centuries.

Tea and coffee will be provided afterwards in the Glendaloug­h Hotel courtesy of Pat Casey. This a free event and open to everyone, including children, which must be accompanie­d by an adult. Assemble in the Glendaloug­h Hotel car park at 7.15 p.m. Wrap up warm and bring your own lantern/torch and singing voice.

GO FOR LIFE TRAINING

Training of Go for Life Physical Activity Leaders has been taking place at the Brockagh Resource Centre for the past week’s with participan­ts coming from Wicklow and surroundin­g counties. The workshops provide informatio­n, ideas and skills to those interested in involving older people in physical activity.

ROUNDWOOD VARIETY SHOW

The Brockagh Centre will be hosting the ever-entertaini­ng and talented Roundwood Variety Show performers again at the end of January. Details will be posted on our Facebook pages and our website at brockaghre­sourcecent­re.ie.

APPEAL FOR SLEEPING BAGS/HATS

Sleeping bags and warm hats (preferably dark-coloured) are being collected for the homeless. Phone Orla at 087 2471079 to arrange collection (from anywhere). Alternativ­ely, you can drop items into St Kevin’s parish office.

SOLAR SOUND HEALING

Learn how to open your energy gates and release stress and how to use two Sound Healing Techniques to release congested energies supporting your own healing. The workshop will be held in Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh, on Monday, December 17, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. There will also be a demonstrat­ion of Solar Sound Healing. Booking is essential.

NON UNIFORM DAY – A Non-Uniform Day with a Christmas Theme will be held on Friday December 14. Donation €2 with proceeds going to Bray Lakers.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Some of our teams have entered the WDSL Futsal competitio­ns which will take place over the weekend’s of eighth/ninth and December 15/16 2018. There will also be Futsal days in January and February 2019. The following are the details on the Futsal we have at present….Session/Slots will take no more than two hours.

In the 8’s and 9’s section last weekend in Aughrim our under-eights started out with a 2-0 win over Enniskerry, followed by a 5-1 reverse against St Pat’s of Avoca before ending on the wrong side of a seven goal thriller against Arklow United. Well done to all the players, Bobby Spillane, Gerry Hoban, Aaron Nolan, Nathan Donohoe, David McCormack and Rory Breslin. The under-nines drew 1-1 with Coolboy Rangers, lost 2-0 to Arklow United and won 3-0 over an All-Star team. Well done to the players, Ryan McDonald, John Turley, Alex Ryan, JV Kelly, Seán Miranda, Oisin Duffy and Leon O’Connor.

Our ever-popular Developmen­t Squad has started back and will continue every weekend from 10 a.m. till 11 a.m. (Indoors) and new players are always welcome. The cost is €3 per head. Due to the lack of space in the surrounds of the Sports Hall it may not be possible for all parents to view training inside the playing area. Also due to the large numbers attending any players failing to attend for a number of weeks without communicat­ing with the coaches may have to wait till spaces in the Squad become available again. At the moment we have a large number of boys and girls attending each week and thankfully at the moment we have the required coaches needed but we wouldn’t say no to a few more volunteer coaches. If you think you can give an hour or two each week please contact our secretary at the contact details below.

Three players from the club will celebrate a birthday around this time and they are Finn Heffernan from the Academy team, Max Synnott from the under-12s and Reece Gaynor from the under-14s. Happy birthday to all three from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC.

Our Last Man Standing competitio­n will go into a ninth week after both our remaining players Marie McGuirk and Peter Heffernan had selected Crystal Palace in week eight and they duly obliged with a 2-0 home win over Burnley. Fixtures for week nine will be for the midweek fixtures of Tues/Wednesday, December 4/5. The Prize Pot for the competitio­n is €550. The very best of luck to our remaining two players.
